Mammal Inventory & Monitoring

Iporanga, Brazil

Inventory the mammals that are living on the Betary Reserve using camera traps.

The project

You will help us to inventory the mammals that are living on the Betary Reserve. You will do this by searching for mammal traces, installing our camera traps at these sites and regularly checking the camera trap footage.

This information is crucial to understand the natural competition animals will face and can help us to decide where to release the animals. Depending on the quantity of footage gathered, this role may not require the full time of a volunteer, and therefore you will also support in other volunteer roles we offer.

The location

The Betary Reserve is situated about 6 kilometres from Iporanga. Iporanga is a small municipality in the State of São Paulo, founded in 1755 on the banks of the Ribeira de Iguape River and at the mouth of the Rio Iporanga. The name Iporanga of Tupi origin means "beautiful river". Iporanga has around 4,300 inhabitants and a total area of 127,700 hectares.

Volunteer work

You will be working closely with our volunteer coordinator, the manager of FreeWildlife Brazil Celine and our other volunteers. We have partnered with IPBio (Biodiversity Research Institute), an NGO that also works on the Betary Reserve with whom we cooperate closely, to develop a joint volunteer program.

Often our programs are interlinked, so you will definitely meet IPBio's staff members and volunteers with whom we often do weekend activities and have dinner parties also. In addition, you will share the accommodation with IPBio's volunteers.

Typical day

As a volunteer at FreeWildlifeBrazil Celine you work from Monday to Friday. A typical working day will range from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Once a week you will go to the camera traps to collect data and/or to set up the camera trap at a new spot. You will do this either with our manager or the volunteer coordinator. The rest of the time will be spend on checking the data and supporting in other roles we offer.

Free-time activities

Our town is called the Cave Capital of Brazil so volunteers often visit our state parks to explore the caves. Hike into the dense forest and visits to waterfalls are also common activities. Tubing, big balloons, are used to drift down the rivers, some of the river route are 3 hours long!

After work volunteers can swim on the reserve deck, organize dinners, watch movies, read and go wildlife watching. On the weekend we often have a barbeque or organize dinner at a restaurant. Often there are social events or parties in the community that volunteers can go to.
