Work at a children's home just outside the beautiful seaside city of Port Elizabeth
One of our projects is at Maranatha Care Home in Port Elizabeth who provide a youth care centre for up to 22 boys and 12 girls who receive full time residential care from the ages of 4 to19. These children have had to deal with appalling domestic circumstances and have been given a refuge at Maranatha. Their aim is to give the children the best opportunity to develop and there are also opportunities for future training and higher education for these children after they pass the age of 18.
The children live at Maranatha on a permanent basis. The home provides a wide range of activities for the children such as sports, games, drama, cooking, singing, art and scouts. There is a farm area and 15 vegetable tunnels. They also offer educational services such as schooling, homework assistance, life skills, spiritual engagement and training camps.
Next to this they have a centre for 25 adults and families who also live on the property. These adults are involved in therapeutic and developmental programs. By helping this project you can ensure they continue to receive the best care and are able to wake up in a comfortable home.
What will you do as a volunteer?
The care home is situated a few kilometers outside of the city of Port Elizabeth, and is a former hospital which has been converted into an ideal environment for needy children. You will be driven to and from the project from your accommodation every week day, depending on what time work needs to be done at the project. As the children go to mainstream schools in the morning, this gives you the chance to work behind the scenes at Maranatha, doing maintenance work, helping in the gardens and grounds, and getting the home ready for when the kids arrive back from school. If you need to relax, contact their family back home, or go shopping in Port Elizabeth, mornings are the best time also to catch up with your own day to day tasks. Your afternoons and evenings will be spent with the children, partaking in various activities from helping with homework, to joining in with sports and personal development activities in the grounds of the home from singing and dancing, to soccer, to reading classes. There are no strictly set volunteering times at the project, but there is always work that needs to be done, whether it be with the kids or behind the scenes.
Children at Maranatha enjoy a varied and stimulating weekend program at the home, from trips to the beach, sports activities to cultural visits from other schools and clubs. The volunteer is more than welcome to partake in these activities, but we also offer a wide range of trips and tours around the Eastern Cape from our professionally accredited tour guide. Unlike other projects, ours is a very tailor made experience, and volunteers are also encouraged to provide personal input into what they want from their free time, allowing us the opportunity to make their travel wishes a reality.
There is also a children's project in Nieu-Bethesda, a small community some 300 kilometers from Port Elizabeth. Volunteers are encouraged, but not obligated to spend a week at this project which is closely related to the home at Maranatha. The setup is very similar to that encountered at Marantha, but the surroundings in this tiny Karoo village are very different. This is all offered at no extra cost to the volunteer.
We offer a very comprehensive program of tailor made weekend activities, some at no extra cost, all overseen by an Eastern Cape registered tour guide.
We will pick you up from the arrivals hall at Port Elizabeth International Airport. Please leave sufficient time for your connecting flight to Johannesburg to land (immigration can be slow).
We provide accommodation in a separate flat of our Port Elizabeth residence, or if you would prefer, at a nearby backpackers. The standard of our accommodation is superb, and we take very seriously the needs of our volunteers.
Breakfast included, vegan and vegetarian available on request.
