Activities in the protection of sea turtles, marine birds and in an environmental education project
In this project you will be part of Ecuadors marine biodiversity conservation. This project is run across the Pacific coast of Ecuador by a non profit organization, this organization was created due to the urgent need to conserve Ecuadors fragile ecosystems and marine resources.
By volunteering in this project you have a unique opportunity to make a valuable experience learning about the biodiversity of Ecuadors coast. You will also share memories that will last a lifetime with the projects staff, local people and other volunteers. You will be a key factor in contributing towards the conservation of Ecuadors marine biodiversity.
The volunteers can be integrated into different projects at any time, the different projects are: Sea turtle project, Marine bird project and Enviromental education project.
In this project you will carry out research and protection work with Green Sea Turtles and Olive Ridleys, including an egg hatchory program.
This project requires staff to travel to a nearby island and remain there for around 8 days at a time, on a typical day you will be tagging and measuring sea turtles, collecting and transfering eggs to the site, capture and recapture of turtles in the sea.
Marine bird project
It is necessary to evaluate the impact of fisheries on marine bird populations to be able to protect these animals. Therefore in this project you will be carrying out a census of marine birds, this involves around 8km of walking everyday and patience to properly count the birds.
On a typical working day you will be: making a census of different marine bird species, data collection on different birds, monitoring birds nests, capturing and tagging marine birds, enviromental education about these birds.
Enviromental education project
The main objective of this project is to educate the people of Puerto Lopez and its surrounding areas about conservation projects.
Thanks to the help of volunteers an Eco-Club was created in the city of Puerto Lopez which has helped in activities like beach cleaning, construction of small gardens and excursions. Volunteers are encouraged to help create new ideas for the club in order for it to keep making a difference to the community.
On a typical day you will be cleaning beaches and marine floor cleaning in Puerto Lopez using snorkelling equipment, planning different activities for the club and also planning activities for schools in the city.
While on this project you will have a lot of free time for activities, where you can participate in many sports, go hiking enjoying the great views, you will also find the beach town of Montañita, known as the surfer's paradise of Ecuador nearby which has a vibrant nightlife.
During your time you will stay in a volunteer house , with maximum 4 people per room (bunk beds), these rooms may be mixed depending on how full the house is, there are shared bathrooms and kitchen with hot water, flushing toilets, kitchen with a refrigerator, a grill for BBQ, hammocks, and WiFi Internet.
