Volunteer students (Scientific Officer assistant) work daily on Vavvaru reef on Korallionlab projects under our Scientific Officer coordination.
Korallionlab is opened to Universities, scientific Institutions and Associations since April 2013.
Located on Vavvaru, a private island in Lhaviyani Atoll in the Indian Ocean, Korallionlab offers many different reef habitats for potential research projects : from tracts of reef with ~100% coral cover, patch reefs within the sandy lagoon and large coral bommies, which are often frequented by manta ray.
There is a purpose built wet lab for tank based experiments and a dry lab adjacent, kitted out with high quality research equipment including fluorescence and stereo microscopes, micro-centrifuges, autoclaves and DNA extraction facilities (including the ability to make dry ice).
Volunteer students (Scientific Officer assistant) after a basic course in coral reef ecology start working daily on Korallionlab marine biology and reef restoration projects under Korallionlab Scientific Officer coordination (SO).
Depending on sea condition they might be involved in lab activities, in coral nursery activities or in any other activities related to any projects running at Korallionlab at that time.
