Marine & Coast Conservation Supporter

Learn new skills and contribute to minimize the adverse environmental impact of tourism and get involved in important conservation and research programs.

Background

With almost 1000 kms of Mediterranean coastline, Spain has a rich marine biodiversity and amazing coastal lifestyle to look after. However, with increased tourism, but lesser awareness on ethical traveling, preservation of natural habitats becomes utmost important. The Marine Conservation Program in Spain is an effort towards keeping the coastal areas clean and safe for aquatic lives to survive.

The project

Located in a traditional fishing town called Denia, 100 kms to south of Valencia and home of the Marine Reserve in the Cape of San Antonio, this marine conservation program is a sincere initiative to maintain and nullify the harsh effect of increased tourism on the environment. Volunteers participating in these projects will learn new skills and contribute to minimize the adverse environmental impact of their travel and get involved in important conservation and research programs.

Volunteer work

Some of the main volunteer tasks under this program includes;

  • Monitoring the whales, dolphins and seabirds.
  • Coastal flora and fauna surveys and data collection.
  • Working at the wetland to improve the ecosystems.
  • Turtle monitoring.
  • Coast and underwater cleaning (scuba).
  • Reforestation and forest fire prevention.
  • Learn to accurately identify the targeted species and helping with the logistical operations.

Diving

One does not need to be a licensed diver, but should know how to swim. Depending on the weather conditions, work during the week will combine both water and coastal activities. All necessary equipment will be provided to the volunteers on the days when underwater tasks are to be done. For those, who are looking for proper diving classes, it can be arranged as well on an additional cost.

Continue the conservation work from where our previous volunteers left it, and contribute your time and efforts to keep the coastal areas clean, as well as make sure that the aquatic wildlife gets a livable habitat.
