A teaching project in a poor neighbourhood in Accra. You can teach your own class. The maintopics are Math and English, the kids are aged from 8 to 16
The Fishing village project is based in Teshie-Fishing Village next to the sea. Fishing and smooking of fish is the main occupation of the adults of these families. However children of these families are mostly seen roaming about in the community without any schooling. Two young men in the community who were fortunate to have education decided to assist these families who cannot afford to take their children to school by organising free classes for them aimed to teacch them how to read and write. The news about these new free classes quickly spread through the community and children started the classes in their numbers. Dream Africa Care Foundation upon hearing the news decided to support this idea of the young men.
Dream Africa Care Foundation has been running the project since 2010. The clases take place in the evening. Since some of the children are going to school it is also possible to attend this evening classes. Some children come with their homework for help, others with questions for explanations and the main subjects taught by the volunteers are maths and english.
As a volunteer you will teach in English and Math’s. The lessons are taking place from Monday to Thursday in the afternoon. A class usually consists of 5 to 30 people.
Ghana has so much to offer to volunteers, with its rich culture, festivals, food, art & craft centers, castles & forts, long sandy beaches, national parks, waterfalls, rain forest and other interesting places to visit.
The DACF management organizes several trips to discover Ghana’s culture, nature and most relaxing places.
Our driver and a staff member will pick you up from the airport and bring you to the place where you will stay. You will visit the project together with other experienced volunteers on the next workday.
You can choose to stay with a local host family or stay in our volunteer house. It depends on the location where you want to be placed. Our main location is the volunteer house in Accra, where you will be living with around 16 other volunteers from all over the world. We have four bedrooms with two bunk beds each and two shared bathrooms. The volunteer house is located in a very safe area in Ghana.
We have a cook in the volunteer house who prepares three meals a day for all the volunteers. We will prepare special food for you, if you have to follow a special diet. The food is mostly western, but we also offer local dishes to our volunteers. If you are placed in a host family you might have more local dishes.
