Communication and public engagement are crucial tools towards the success of Archipelagos’ conservation efforts.
The media and public relations team creates material on biodiversity, environmental conservation and public health issues through various platforms, with the goal of raising awareness and effecting change. Focusing on various subjects, interns take part in a range of projects, collaborating with different scientific teams. The main fields of activity include:
- Creating press releases for newspapers, online media, TV and radio
- Increasing awareness of local and global environmental issues through social media
- Promoting and encouraging environmental conservation on an individual level through social media
- Creating informational material and updates regarding Archipelagos
- Expanding Archipelagos’ partnerships through networking
- Designing environmental education material, fundraising campaigns and events
Typical day
Office-work, managing social media and website. Organising and editing photographs and footage.

Details on Arrival
Generally, our new team members start their project on the first of each month. All placements start and end on Samos island. If you have a problem with finding flights of reasonable price to arrive here on these days, please let me know and we can find an alternative. In any case it is important that you email me the details when you have booked your flights. On arrival to the island you will need to make your own way to Archipelagos’ research base, located in the settlement of Mesokampos, just off Pythagorio.

Program Requirements
In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date.
There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.
You need to speak English (intermediate level)
Arts, Communications, Social Sciences at University level
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
At least one year of college or university studies in the fields of art, communications or science
Proficiency using and managing social media accounts
Experience in public relations and/or journalistic writing
Excellent organizational and time-management skills
High standard of work
Fluency in English
Ability to work both individually and as part of a dynamic, multi-cultural team
Sincere desire to work towards Archipelagos’ conservation efforts

Before your journey
Archipelagos Institute (your host organization) provides consulting and is keen to answer all your questions. Once you reserved your spot, you will receive the contact details of
your volunteer project.

On-site services
Monthly fees of 650 euro include:
- Living expenses (shared accommodation, all meals, wi-fi)
- Use of equipment & research boats
- Transport for working purposes
- Greek language lessons
Dorm room with between 3 and 7 other roommates and a bathroom for each room.
Outdoor kitchen.
Hanging out/meeting area in the base.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided.
Good access at the project site
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either.
The nearest airport is Samos Airport (SMI) in Samos. We assist you to find cheap flights to Greece.
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury,
cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Greece provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Greece you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey.

Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Greece.
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider.
If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Your final payment will be agreed with {project.name} during the application process.
Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
