Medical Assistance

Medical/Premedical assistance needed to help at the La Mesa Hospital and improve the inhabitant´s quality of life. We have a shortage of qualified staff.

Assistants with Medical / Nursing / Therapy / Dental training are needed. The La Mesa Hospital is a level 2 Hospital that provides Health Service for the town and small villages around it. With 32000 inhabitants attending between 200-300 patients per day. The Dental Department attends 27 patients per professional per day. Medical / Nurses Students and Professionals will assist in different areas within the hospital helping Medical staff and Nurses with different medical procedures. Therapists will assist with outpatients and inpatients physical rehabilitation. This is a great opportunity to improve skills, knowledge, resume, language, learn about medicine in a developing country. Hands on procedures will be restricted with limited language skills and abilities. The Hospital is undertaking the building of a new A%E department so more help will be needed. As this is a very warm area with a high number of adult population and as a touristic town it will be the opportunity to train in different areas and skills.

Typical day

A typical shift start early in the morning (6:45 am) or depending on you alocated shif, with a brief on the ward, A%E Department or outpatients department. Then medical/nurses staff will carry on with their assigments, assisting Doctors, Nurses, Therapists or Dentists depending on which program you are in. You will have a break to have a meal. Normal shift hours are 8 hours per day. Weekends for travelling and sightseeing.

Free-time activities

The La Mesa town offer a variety of activities as it is surrounded by mountains, rivers, lakes, waterfalls. The cercanity to the Capital City of Bogota offer the opportunity to visit Museums, restaurants, bars and discos. For the weekends we offer organised tours to go caving or visiting other Colombian Counties like Santander or Boyaca which offer a lot more to do like visiting waterfalls, lakes, caves, extreme sports. Other volunteers have managed to visit the Tayrona Park in Santa Martha, Cartagena, The Caño Cristales in The Macarena, Palm Trees farms in Armenia, Coffee and Sugar Cane farms around. The Orquid Sanctuary at the Tequendama region and small towns around La Mesa. There is plenty to do in here, also we are blessed with hot climate. So be prepared.



What's included?
In country Orientation, Accommodation,2 to 3 meals depending on the programs. Pick up and drop off at the airport, Laundry, Guidance to the work place.
What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.

Airport Pickup

Pick up and drop off from the Bogota, El Dorado Airport.


Living accommodation is in a share bungalow for up to 10 volunteers at the LPDLM headquarters in San Javier Village.

Single rooms only if request or less than 6 volunteers at one time.

Only two volunteers per room share a bunk bed

Bed linen is provided.

Volunteers will need to buy toiletries.

Common areas will be at the main house.

The Bungalow rooms are well decorated. With desk, Lamp, electricity, hot and cold share shower,two share toilets.

Unfortunately, the internet connection at the host family's house is not always stable. But you can go to the main town center of La Mesa to connect to the internet very easily. Is only 20 minutes by minibus.

For hot climate and the country side volunteers need to be prepared: with very light and long sleeves shirts and trousers at all times
Repellent, Sun Creams, Hat, torch to walk in the evening to the accommodation site if the volunteers decide coming late.

2 to 3 meals are provided and it will be home fresh cooked traditional meals. A typical breakfast can include: eggs, coffee or chocolate, bread, butter, juice. (Colombian meals can vary everyday). Lunch / dinner can include: Vegetables, rice or pasta , meat or chiken, tuberculos like potato or yuca, salads and soup.

Average Fees
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Volunteer Colombia LPDLM during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
