The Healthcare facilities in Ghana are not very widespread and due to extreme poverty many people are still unable to avail of the basic medical facilities. This program is particularly suited for those volunteers who are interested in health issues and doing ‘hands on’ clinical work. Volunteers work for around 6 hrs in a day for 5 days in a week. Volunteers schedule is flexible and can vary depending on the needs of the placement.

As a volunteer or intern your day will range from observational to direct patient assistance, depending on your level of knowledge. An important element of these volunteer placements is being exposed to healthcare practices in a different culture, which can be a tremendous learning experience, no matter what your background might be. To work alongside local professionals observing different approaches to various conditions and treatments, and to assist with regular outreach work.

Typical day

Volunteers in the Medical Healthcare program in Ghana work along with doctors, nurses and local staff in hospitals and community clinics in different locations across Ghana. Volunteer tasks are determined depending on the volunteer’s qualifications, experience and knowledge.

  • Medical professionals and students can assist the doctors and nurses in their work and observe their work to gain knowledge and experience.
  • Qualified medical volunteers work in the areas of maternal health, mental health, surgery, laboratories, counseling and testing. Wound dressing under direct supervision of nursing staff.
  • Blood pressure, pulse and temperature measurements (if competent).
  • Assist patients with activities such as getting them from one service point to another.
  • Weighing patients, holding babies/adults to be weighed.
  • General assistance to the medical staff wherever required, and wherever experience and expertise allow.
  • Pre Medical students assist the local doctors and staff in doing basic tasks such as checking weight and temperature of the patients, cleaning wounds and also doing administrative tasks in the placement.

Free-time activities

Accra has developed a fairly western social scene in the recent years, mainly because of the large expatriate community in the city. On Friday night, singing karaoke in the champs sports bar at the Paloma Hotel, you would be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back into Europe. And this has its place-after a month living in the village, a cocktail and some fluent English conversation can be just what you need.

There are some great deal of bars in Accra with much more feel, and much more opportunity to interact with Ghanaians, one popular place with volunteers is ’By well’ at the southern end of Osu Oxford street, where the house band plays every Thursday evening. Cape coast also has good bars, ‘Oasis’ on the beach near the Castle is popular and sometimes has impressive live drumming and dancing shows.

Spot bars are usually relatively inexpensive, and the sorts of places local people to for their beer after work. Learning some Twi or Ewe and some Ga from the locals as the sun goes down and sip an ice-cold star or club beer can be a great and very cheap evening out. Labadi beach is also a place where volunteers go swimming and horse riding.
Ghana being a safari destination for tourists, our program has established links to various destinations for our volunteers. Volunteers have the opportunity to visit the famous Kakum canopy walk, Tafi Atome monkey sanctuary, Wli water falls, Cape Coast castle and the Mole national park.
