Gain invaluable experience assisting in a hospital in Nepal, where you will be able to work with and observe some great local medical professionals. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

This will allow you to gain greater appreciation and understanding of some of the challenges that Kathmandu faces.

Our medical volunteers are placed in a range of hospitals and clinics located in the Himalayan Kingdom in Nepal, offering both private and government healthcare.

This unique experience is the perfect project if you are embarking on a career in medicine and will offer you a wide range of out-patient healthcare activities – suitable for both medical students and medical practitioners. Not only this but it will help to boost your C.V. or further education application and clearly distinguish you amongst your peers, giving you an edge for your future career in medicine.

Under the guidance of professional doctors and nurses, you can make a huge difference helping out in the hospitals offering an additional pair of hands as a medical assistant. You may also get the chance to work in more rural health clinics to help establish more sustainable standards of health and hygiene.

Tasks will be assigned strictly on the basis of experience, but typical tasks will include performing minor procedures, physical examinations, clerical duties, patient observations and routine check-ups.

Typical day

You will spend your days in the hospital or clinic caring for those in the local community. You will be typically volunteering around 4-6 hours per day from around 9:00am Monday to Friday. During the week you may do the following:

Assessments and care duties
You will help daily assisting in general patient check-ups, including checking blood pressure, breathing rates, pulse and temperature.  This will also include physical examinations of the height and weight of patients and building the medical history by obtaining important information on past medical history, medications and allergies.

Minor procedures
Dependant on your experience you will get to perform minor procedures such as giving vaccinations and suturing wounds.

You may get to shadow doctors on critical surgeries and operations as an when they occur.

Testing duties
During your working day you will also collect samples (urine, blood etc) for laboratory testing.

Preparation duties
To ensure the swift treatment of patients, part of your duties will include readying them for testing, treatment or procedures to be carried out by the doctor. This can include activities such as removing bandages or cleaning a wound.

Clerical duties
Updating the patient files and charts is really helpful for the busy nurses and doctors. You may also conduct hospital rounds as part of your volunteering role.
