Health & Help

Medical Clinic Supporter

Medical Clinic Supporter is expected to provide medical care in the following areas: pediatrics, general medicine, maternal health.

Program Summary
We provide consultations in the following areas: pediatrics, general medicine, maternal health, and infectious and tropical diseases. We are a non-profit entity, which is funded by donations and voluntary contributions. Strong humanitarian ties help us contribute to the physical and mental health of the indigenous population of the rural area of Guatemala and Latin America.

Health&Help medical clinic is the only medical facility in the Totonicapan area, which is home to over 15,000 Guatemalans. Most of our patients are pregnant women, infants, and toddlers.  We are looking for more volunteers to join our team.

Program Highlights
In this program, you will be able to:
- Run a rural clinic, providing locals with medical assistance, contribute to community’s health care
- Learn about traditional birth giving in Guatemala
- Make a difference in the lives of local people, especially when it comes to their health
- Work in an international team of professionals
- Be provided with meals, accommodation, and medical support free of charge
- Stay in one of the most beautiful places of rural Guatemala

We operate in critical conditions: soon-to-be-finished clinical building with primitive equipment, but with quality medical supplies. We also run field trips to the remote villages in order to provide medical assistance.

Please let us know in your cover letter if you had similar previous experience.

We would kindly appreciate if you could bring equipment and/or supplies with yourself - please contact us in advance for more information.

Typical day

A typical day of a Health&Help volunteer consists of daily routine chores mainly: cleaning, cooking, medical supplies inventory, putting various medical programs guidebooks together.
It starts at 8am, when we get up and start with the washing up and cooking breakfast. Working day starts at 9 am and goes on till 6 pm. Whenever patients come, we are there to assist them with their problems: digestive diseases, prenatal and postnatal care, including labors, cleaning and stitching up wounds. We organise field trips as well, in order to examine patients in the distant areas, where the transportation system is not that developed. In the evening, we relax and play board games, talk to each other, walk or surf the Internet in the cafe in the nearby village.

Free-time activities

The most spectacular thing about Guatemala is its nature. The countryside is by far the most amazing thing we have ever seen in our lives. Guatemala is beautiful. While travelling, you watch the mountains getting shrouded with misty clouds. It feels as if you are on the National Geographic TV show –the weather’s changing every second as in high-speed shots.

We are living in the jungle, surrounded by trees and bushes. There are banana trees in our garden; hummingbirds are flying around the hospital sipping nectar from the flowers.
