Opened in 2009, the Olorien Community Clinic is the first clinic in Arusha that offers a range of medical treatments and operations. Although it is a private clinic, patients only pay minimal treatment fees. In this way, many people can be reached who otherwise could not afford professional medical treatment. The clinic is supported by the Baptist Church in Arusha, which also supports a school, and two parishes in the United States.

The medical director of the clinic, Dr. Robert Byemba is originally from Congo, where he gained many years of experience in the field of medical care in developing countries. Dr. Byemba is also the mentor for international volunteers and is happy to pass on his knowledge and experience.

A mission at the Olorien Community Clinic is primarily for volunteers who want to learn more about health care in Africa and seek guidance and practice. But on the other hand, they also want to be able to actively introduce themselves. Volunteers at the Olorien Community Clinic should already have a medical qualification. Nursing internships for aspiring medical students are therefore not possible in the clinic.

Please note: Please bring your own work clothes (smocks, light pants, adequate shoes).

Typical day

Olorien Community Clinic is located in the Kijenge-Mwanama district. From our STEP Africa house there are two short bus rides and a walk of about 1km, which can also be covered with a motorbike taxi. Overall, the route is very safe and easy to handle and takes about 30 minutes. Your daily core working hours are between 8:30 am and 3 pm.

The Olorien Community Clinic offers a variety of medical services, which means that each day will look different and you will be able to explore many different areas. These include general medical services, operations, laboratory tests, ultrasound and there is also a pharmacy in the clinic.

The most common operations performed at the Olorien Community Clinic include circumcision, suturing wounds, burn treatment, abscess removal, tumors and cysts, and drainage. In the lab, volunteers can take blood and learn about tropical diseases while learning about treatment options and available medicines at the pharmacy.

Within these areas, volunteers can engage according to their knowledge, interests and needs. Dr. Byemba is a great mentor for volunteers and encourages them to get involved in all areas of the clinic.

Free-time activities

The project is based in Arusha, Tanzania. There are several free time activities volunteers can engage in. We organize Safaris, mountain climbs and shorter tours like hiking, horse riding, visit to a nearby massai village, trip to the hotsprings and waterfalls, coffee tours, etc. to the nearer surroundings at affordable rates. We always make sure, that all guides and staffs are being paid fair wages. At the same time there are lots of things you can do during your free time or at the weekends in Arusha itself. There are different markets like second hand market, spice markets or massai market, as well as typical african restaurants and bars. Furthermore, the area you will live is very beautiful and you can either go to a lake and do canoeing or you can go to a lodge with a pool near to the hostel to relax for little money. Our other volunteers from the hostel will be happy to show you everything and if you join them at your free weekends!
