Medical Internship

Kumasi, Ghana

Observe local professionals and perform routine tasks in various departments as you work directly with doctors & nurses to heal patients in Kumasi, Ghana - West Africa.

OGVO Medical Internships offer motivated nursing, pre-med and medical students the chance to experience on the job training and gain valuable insight into daily operations of healthcare services in a developing country.

Interns joining the Medical internship program get the opportunity to work at local government & private Ghanaian Hospitals and medical clinics. Interns receive hands-on clinical experience as well as the opportunity to observe & experience the healthcare system in Ghana.

Medical internships in Ghana are perfect for medical students and undergraduates interested in gaining valuable medical experience. Internships are available in a selection of medical fields including A&E, pediatrics, maternity, mental health and surgery, and a variety of other fields.

If you have the motivation & desire to learn more about healthcare in a developing country, gain more experience, or just hope to help those less fortunate, then a OGVO Medical Internship is for you!

We can organise placements from people of all backgrounds. So whether you’re a school leaver looking for work experience to boost your university application or a nursing / medical student organising an overseas elective placement, – we have just the project for you!

The Project

Our medical & nursing programs are based in the bustling city of Kumasi with Volunteers working in one of six busy city hospitals catering to over 1.5 million people. Volunteer nurses also have the option to take part in regular medical outreach work. This can include visiting a local orphanage or treating children in remote villages where medical assistance is in dire need.

Often hospitals are poorly resourced, lack experienced staff and do not have the funds to pay for otherwise routine medical treatments; leaving many patients with serious illnesses usually preventable with proper healthcare. The hospitals and clinics that we work with are striving to fulfill these needs and are always searching of an extra pair of hands to assist in daily operations.

Interns will assist doctors, nurses, and other healthcare staff to provide healthcare in one of Kumasi’s busiest hospitals or clinics. Whilst qualified nurses and doctors can assist in the provision of the day-to-day treatments of illness, medical & nursing students have the opportunity to work in several departments including A&E, pediatrics, maternity, mental health and surgery.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in selected fields where medical practices can differ considerably to those in Western countries (Europe, America, etc.). Many Volunteers find this experience very challenging at times, but also hugely rewarding.

Role of the Volunteer

Medical interns will be paired with local doctors and nurses. Depending on your knowledge and skills, you will be asked to assist with various procedures such as suturing wounds, giving vaccinations, being involved in the daily procedures of the hospital – observing or directly providing various sorts of assistance to existing doctors and nurses.

Interns may also be expected to assist in administrative tasks such as; conducting hospital rounds with the doctors, maintaining files, routine patient check-ups, measure blood pressure, body temperature, record patient’s height, weight, and more.

Your role at the hospital/clinic will depend on your level of education and any prior experience you have. In most cases interns will begin by shadowing the local hospital staff before being transferred to one of the departments in the facility. These departments include, but are not limited to;

  • Adolescent Counselling
  • Community Health Education
  • Dentistry, Ear
  • Nose and Throat (ENT)
  • General surgery
  • Laboratory
  • Nursing
  • Maternity & Midwifery
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Paediatrics
  • Pharmacology
  • Physical Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Prenatal
  • Psychology
  • Radiology
  • Ultrasound

Location
Ghana is a peaceful and welcoming country; Ghana satisfies one's appetite for both modern and traditional life. Its wide valleys, low-lying coastal plains, and thick rainforests resound with the beat of traditional rituals, while her cities glow and vibrate with all the bustle of the modern world. The Ghanaians are the friendliest people in West Africa: warm, proud yet humble with a contagious and calming sense of funniness.

Ghana is hot. It is always hot. What’s more, it's always humid. Humidity usually lingers between 95 and 100 percent. The rainy season lasts from mid-June to mid-November - sometimes. The rain provides a little respite from the intense heat, but temperatures will still be in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. The south of the country experiences the heaviest rainfall during September.
