Medical Support Assistant

District Kangra, India show on map

Learn first hand from fully qualified doctors and nurses in a variety of departments to get a real insight into how the healthcare system in India works.

Experience a different side to India as you travel to the picturesque town of Palampur, located at the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. Surrounded by rice fields and tea plantations, this lush green landscape with far reaching views to the snow capped mountains is the perfect place to volunteer.

Are you are a qualified medic or are studying medicine, nursing or physiotherapy? If so, this programme is ideal for gaining practical, varied and an in-depth insight that will provide a greater understanding and appreciation of the challenges faced here.

Working with a number of health institutions, including hospitals, dental clinics and nursing homes, this programme is the perfect way to gain valuable experience to kick-start your career. Some of the places you may volunteer at include Karan Hospital, Goenka Hospital and Kalyan Medical Centre.

Working alongside staff from various departments (whom are all keen to share their experience with you), you will get to be involved in daily procedures like conducting hospital rounds, patient check-ups, assisting with minor tasks, maintaining files and even get to observe critical surgeries and operations.

You will get to spend your time rotating around different departments or if preferred, you can choose to focus your time on one or two particular areas to gain a deeper understanding. We can tailor your rota to suit your particular fields of interest to ensure you make the most of your time here.

Typical day

You will be primarily based in a busy private hospital that has just over 50 beds and a large outpatient department. With 3 surgeries and more minor procedures everyday you will get the opportunity to experience a wide variety of roles.

The activities you get to do on this programme will depend on the particular departments you have chosen to gain experience in, and on the current priorities of the hospital. Typically working 5 days a week, Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 14:00, you will leave with a true understanding of life as a medical professional in India. Some of the departments you can choose to work in, include:

  • In-patients wards
  • The laboratory
  • Pharmacy
  • Radiology / Imaging
  • Occupational therapy
  • General wards
