Care for patient, assist with operations and learn how a big hospital in Tanzania works.
Hospitals and health care can be really different from what you are used
from home. Usually the access to health care depends on a person’s
income, insurances are not common. It can be really interesting for
interns and volunteers to experience the clinical routine in a country
like Tanzania since sometimes resources are limited.
The Meru District Hospital is a large hospital with a capacity of 110 in bed patients. On average, 200 patients are provided for daily. The hospital covers all areas of modern medical care. Among others there is a paediatrics, HIV/Aids-, malaria- and tuberculosis-clinic, eye and dental care, mental health and physiotherapy, a maternity ward and over 1.000 operations are performed annually.
Your work varies and depends heavily on your interests and your previous knowledge. Under the guidance of the local doctors and care takers you will take over various tasks, such as patient care, assistance with operations and such. For all interns and volunteers from the hospital, an individual work plan is created so that you know exactly which your tasks are and this is also how optimal care can be guaranteed.
Previous experiences are an advantage but not a requirement. Whether as a practical term, internship or volunteer work before studying, anyone who has a quick apprehension is welcomed in the hospital.
To work in the hospital you should be vaccinated against all major diseases.
In the hospital there is no typical day. You day depend on work, which depends on your skills, interest and the demand of the hospital.
Every day you will meet different people and face different challenges but here you will make life changing experience and make friends for a life time!
