Medical Support

Improve the quality of life for vulnerable collectives, women and children, in Tanzania Mainland.

St Joseph hospital Moshi

St. Joseph Hospital is funded by the Catholic Church and the Government. It was founded in 2001 and since then, the hospital has been continuously expanding. The most common wards in the hospital are; Female ward, Male ward, Pediatric ward, Out-patient ward, Operation theater and Laboratory. There is new maternity ward with labor/delivery room. In the hospital there are about 200 out-patients every day and about 300 patients on the wards. This hospital offers internships for nursing and medical students.

St. Joseph hospital is the best of all the training hospitals in Moshi. The staff are professional and motivated. They pay attention to the interns, telling them about their work and the different tasks that they fulfill. The interns are not there just to observe, but they are given different tasks to perform based upon their previous experience and training.

Mawenzi Regional Hospital

Mawenzi regional Hospital was founded in 1920 as a small military dispensary for German soldiers. 1956 the dispensary became a hospital. In the 1971 KCMC, (Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center) a big university hospital, was opened in Moshi. After that the support and development has been concentrated there and Mawenzi stayed behind, without the same level of support and funds. But it is still a very busy and large hospital.

There are altogether 447 workers in the hospital, 152 nurses, over 20 doctors and around 300 beds. You can find all the most common departments in Mawenzi; Medical wards, Surgical wards, Pediatric ward, Physiotherapy unit (where there are 2 Physiotherapists), HIV-unit, Tuberculosis clinic, X-ray unit, a Laboratory, Gynecological and prenatal ward - where there is also labor ward.

In addition to the wards, there are more than 300 out-patients in the hospital every day and about 50 of them will be admitted to the hospital daily. In the Pediatric ward there are 60 beds but there can be up to 4 kids sleeping in one bed, so the amount of patients in the pediatric ward can easily rise up to 200. In labor ward there are more than 40 beds and several deliveries every day.

Mawenzi hospital is very busy and there is always plenty going on. The employees of of the hospital speak English and there has been plenty foreigners working in the hospital before, so they are used to working with foreigners. This makes Mawenzi hospital a very good practical training placement.
