Join us in Costa Rica this summer and gain real medical experience, working alongside Doctors and qualified medical workers in a private clinic.
Volunteering in Costa Rica will give you a truly unique opportunity to learn directly from English speaking doctors and paramedics. Prior medical experience as a medical student is required, as well as enthusiasm to learn and get stuck in where you can! You’ll be based in the paradise town of Quepos, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Here you’ll work Monday to Friday at a private clinic for at least 4 hours per day, with the chance to work longer, subject to group sizes.
After an introduction with the Gapforce Team and settling down in your host family or hostel, you will be introduced to the hospital and the staff the next dayThe clinic serves both the local community and tourists in and around the town, which means you’ll likely experience a huge variety of issues. The majority of your time will be observation and learning, however where possible, the doctors will involve you in minor procedures. The clinic also operates two ambulances, which gives you the chance to join the paramedics and learn about pre-hospital care. You can help out in simple but practical ways, vastly increasing your own knowledge and understanding of medical practice.
You’ll have mornings or afternoons off depending on your schedule, plus the weekends. This leaves plenty of time to really experience what this location has to offer. There’s something for absolutely everyone – stunning beaches, abundant wildlife, adventure sports galore, hiking, scuba diving, culture, volcanoes, thermal spas and loads more!
We even include private surfing lessons to get you started and a half day zip lining tour of the rainforest canopy! On the weekends we will offer advice and support if you would like to go exploring further afield. However you are of course welcome to relax at home, visit and explore your local surroundings. You’ll always have something brilliant to do in this tropical gem.
We can help you book transport and accommodation for visits to the stunning pacific coast (as short drive away) where there are opportunities to swim, sunbathe, snorkel, scuba dive and surf.
Airport pick-up in San José on the day of the program start
You will be based in homestays with local families, giving you a great opportunity to learn about real Costa Rican culture and customs. As a minimum, at least one of the family members will speak good English. You’ll usually be placed with another volunteer in the same family, so you won’t be alone. You can also choose to stay in a hosteö nearby.
3 meals a day will be provided. The food is basic but nutritious and incorporates local produce and local recipes.
