Our after care program (Mon/Fri) gives children the opportunity to play, to meet and have fun together. We are looking for people with skills on sports; music (marimba)

The Sithand'Izingane project is the name of this well organised NGO in the Tsakane - KwaThema township approx. 56km South-East of Johannesburg in the East Rand area. Our daily after care program runs from 14:00 until 16:30 - Monday to Friday. After the children come back from school, they walk to the Sithand'Izingane project or are picked up by our own schoolbus. They also walk to 1 of our own safe-parks in the township for lunch and activities, as the Department of Social Development decided that we have to built safe areas for the children and devide  them in smaller groups.

In total we take care of 1148 children of which at least 400 - 600 children join the after care. The program is coordinated by our Care-Givers and Social Auxiliary workers, and the volunteers join the program and assist during the activities. The activities are divided in sports; education (homework); life skills; free-play; cultural activities; music; dance and drama;  health; prevention workshops on HIV-AIDS. Every day of the week has as a theme. 

 

We expect our volunteers to be open minded, supportive to the program; but also to take own initiative during the program. The volunteers will join the program and support the Care Givers with their own skills, and help us to create a nice environment in which our children can play, meet with their peers and have fun together.  In the morning the volunteers will join the other staff members and assist where necessary. We don't have a prepared To--Do-List but we will make a plan for the day depending on the need of that day. Volunteers will be 100% part of our Sithand'Izingane Family and also join the monthly staff meetings and other events during their stay at the project.

Typical day

There is no typically day routine in the project. Although there is a schedule, every day is different and every day has surprises and unexpected interventions. 

Usually a day in our project can be like this:

  • 08:00 Staff & children (4-6 years) arrive at the ECD Centre/creche. Our creche runs between 08:00 - 18:00.
  • 08:30 Staff arrives at the project to sign in for the day.
  • 09:00 Opening prayer in the classroom with most of our staff & management.
  • 09:30 Care givers join for planning of the day and cup of tea.
  • 10:00 Care givers leave for their daily routine in the township.
  • 10:00 Other staff members start their work in the office; garden; sewing class; maintenance; creche ECD centre
  • 10:15 Tea time for all the staff
  • 13:00 Lunch time
  • 14.30 Children arrive for after care; lunch and activities
  • 17:00 closing of the project for today
  • On Friday the children only come to the project for lunch as there is no program. The project is closed at 15:00
  • On Saturday and Sunday there is also no after care and the project is closed.

For the volunteer there are a lot of possibilities during the day:

Supporting the kitchen staff in the morning to prepare all the meals (600) and prepare lunch for the staff.

  1. Go out and join the Care Givers during their work in the township. There are some restrictions with regards to privacy legislation, that we will         explain when the volunteers arrive at the project.
  2. Work together with our Social Auxiliaries during home visits. This is specifically interesting for students social work.
  3. Join the teachers at the ECD Centre to work with the little children. This is only for students with ECD skills and diploma and if you join the project for at least 4 -6 weeks.
  4. Work in our maintenance team: paintwork; repairs; plumbing; electricity; blocked drains etc.
  5. Work and support during after care during all kind of activities. Organise your own activities with the children and assist the Care Givers to create a nice atmosphere with the children. We are looking for volunteers with skills on sports; music; marimba; drama etc. 
  6. Bring your own skills and organise workshops, classes where you can teach our children and Care Givers: First AID training; Computer classes; Health Training; Music classes: Marimba, piano, choir etc. 
  7. We have our own volunteer - mentor, and she will work with the volunteers to make a plan for the day & week. There is not such a thing as a work To-Do list for the volunteers, but we make a plan for that specific day. There is no typically routine but be aware that things can change during the day and things are organised in a different way then you are used to at home. 

Details on Arrival

> Volunteers are always welcome during the year except for December - January - February as this is the Festive season and the project is closed for a few weeks. 

> There is a minimum period of at least 4 weeks, and you must be 18 years old to work at the project.

> For all adults who join the project as volunteer, we need a police clearance certificate from your home country. Also our own staff, management and board members are checked annually. 

> The project is closed between approx. 15 December and 15 January. During those weeks the children stay at home and there is no support from the project. Our staff has a 2-3 week holiday break and the children only come back to the project end of January. This is a requirement from the Department of Social Development in an attempt to try to make the children and their families less dependent. Families must take care of their children and the project helps the families to prepare in advance for those weeks in December.

 

Volunteers are welcome to arrive on any day and any time during the week. We will pick you up from the airport (OR Tambo Int. Airport) and bring you to the volunteer house situated near the project. In depends on your arrival time if we join the project the same day, or if we go to the volunteer house and join the project the day after. 

 

Our NGO has a limited budget and this budget is only allowed to be used for the children; the program and the staff. Therefore we cannot give any financial support to our volunteers; students that come to the project. 

For accommodation and all the meals during the day, for transport to the project; for guidance and support, we ask a financial contribution depending on the length of your stay, and depending on specific wishes.     

Free-time activities

Saturday and Sunday is the time to explore the City of Johannesburg, the Township and the country. As our NGO is not a travel agency we only can assist you in planning for the weekend and other trips into South Africa. We are more than happy to assist and make the weekend also a once-in-a-lifetime-experience. 

Johannesburg or Jozi or Eguli or Jo'burg is a lovely city with al ot of opportunities and many students. Although there is still a negative stigma and also a lot of crime we love to take you into town to show you around. Jo'burg is our hometown and it is a great and wonderful city.

 

Many things to do:

Apartheid Museum; City Tour & Walking tour Hillbrow area; Hop-Hop-Off Bus tour; Visit student areas Jo'burg; Cinema; Maboneng area on Sunday; Market On Main on Sunday; Organic Market on Saturday; Boere-market on Saturday at 05:00; Jazz clubs in Braamfontein; Several other markets and many shopping malls in Jo'burg and Pretoria; Soweto tours and Hector Pieterson museum; Regina Mundi church Soweto; Pilanesberg Nature Reserve (big 5) and Krugerpark. But also visit the Tsakane - KwaThema township where you are at work learn about the daily live in the township.

 

If you are a walker you can join the Walk-The-Talk event in July and if you are a runner you can join Park-Run on Saturday morning or other runs during the year. There is also a soccer team at the project as well as Net-Ball during the week.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Required Documents
CV is more then welcome; a personal introduction as well. The police clearance is necessary as part of the requirements for volunteers by the Department of Social Development.

FEE:

Fees as calculated above are not final. All our rooms are sharing, 2 people / room NO Dorm bed). If you prefer not to share although there are more visitors, we add USD 12 to the fee for that day / week. Depending on the length of your stay we also give some discount for long term volunteers (3 months and more). 

Fees are a approx amount and must be calculated depending on travel time, arrival date; length of stay.

 

Included:

Accommodation in our volunteer house (10 min drive from the project)

3 meals per day: basic breakfast in the house; lunch in project; diner in the house.

We serve a basic breakfast for all. If you want to upgrade with yoghurt; bacon; cruesli; juice etc you can do so but this is for own expense. 

Guidance and support during the day, as this is a income generating job for our local employee.

Airport Pickup at O.R. Tambo International Airport

Pick up / Dop off is not included in the volunteer fee, as volunteers sometimes decide not to use our transport or rent a car. 

It also happens that a volunteer asks for pick up and at the last minute they decide not to use the transport. At that time we have to cancel the trip and tell the local driver that he is not driving, and therefore not earning his extra for the week. That's why we didn't include this is the volunteer fee.

 

  • Pick up point: Arrival Hall A at the airport unless otherwise decided with the volunteer
  • Driver: local driver or somebody from our volunteer house
  • Driving time: Approx. 35 min depending on traffic and arrival time.
  • Taxi / Über: Also available at the airport.

 

Accommodation

Our volunteer house is part of the Dominican Convent in Geluksdal (10 min drive from the project). The house has 2 small buildings and one of them is accommodation for the volunteers; guests and students. There are 3 bedrooms for 6 people and if necessary you will share the room with other guests. If you prefer not to share even if we have more visitors we will add R100 to your weekly expenses. 

We share cooking skills and everybody has to take turns during the week. Shopping is organised by the volunteer house. We also share toilet and shower in the house as well as the living room and kitchen. During the week and weekend we eat together in the evening with everybody who is available in the house. 

The house is situated in the Geluksdal Extention, and has a lovely garden, unfortunately there is no swimming pool. 

We have 2 lovely dogs who take care of the property and you are allowed to take them for a walk. Shops, post office, are nearby but we have to drive as it is to far to walk. Public transport is available for short distances into town, but only if you are accompanied by a local person.

You can see the skyline of Jo'burg but to go there by car is approx. 45 minutes. 

 

The house is situated in a clean, safe and friendly environment in Geluksdal and the people know this place as the Convent, because until 2014 it was the house of the Dominican Sisters who worked in the Township.

Food & Beverages

Basic breakfast in the morning in the house: 

eggs, bread, milk, coffee and tea, cheese, sweets. If you want to add yoghurt, cruesli, bacon, juice etc you can do so, but this is for own expense.

Lunch in the project in the afternoon: local dish

Diner in the evening in the house:

Somebody takes turn to cook and provides the shopping list in the morning.

 

There is a little honesty bar and you write down what you take from the fridge.

Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in Johannesburg. We assist you to find cheap flights to South Africa.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for South Africa provides security and is a plus to have.

Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in South Africa.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Sithand'Izingane Care Project during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
