The project

Costa Rica has many national parks spread throughout the country and you will be assigned to one of these. The very diverse wildlife of Costa Rica, attracts many tourists to the national parks each year being known as one of the worlds most famous travel destination. The parks offer many attractions such as beautiful beaches, volcanoes, mountain ranges, rain and cloud forests, lagoons, rivers, waterfalls, and many different exotic animals.

The parks are home to many refuges and engangered species while offering outdoor activities such as hiking, horseriding, rafting and lots more. There are many animals in Costa Ricas wildlife such as monkeys, jaguars, pumas and many types of birds and reptiles which you will see on your visit.

The main attraction of the coastal parks are world renowned sea turtles. The park focuses a lot on these, because they are in danger of extinction. Thousands of sea turtles come to the beaches each year and lay there eggs.

Your Work

Since there are so many national parks to choose from in Costa Rica day to day tasks vary depending on the location. Usually, you will work between five and six days per week from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with one hour for lunch. Volunteers usually have at least one day off a week, this gives you time to explore the nature of Costa Rica and indulge in the culture.

Tasks you will be expected to do on a day to day basis are:

  • Clearing and maintaining hiking trails
  • Cleaning beaches
  • Protecting and taking care of the local wildlife
  • Help with the operations at the national parks by educating visitors on the local wildlife and its importance
  • Administrative tasks in the national park offices

When you arrive in Costa Rica you will learn about the parks, which will all be explained to you at a meeting. Once you know each park, it is up to you to choose one of the parks this is based on the availability of the park and your experience in Costa Rica, this will give you the oppurtunity to gain experience you would not gain else where.

You can work in different parks at no additional fee, if you volunteer longer than 4 weeks you can experience different parks and regions of the beautiful country, each parks stay is a minimum of 2 weeks.
