The Working Student Program is designed for natural horsemanship interested people, who want to combine an unique, inspiring learning and working experience with an unforgettable time in Costa Rica.

As a working student you will be part of our team and learn Natural Horsemanship as well as Spanish and meet many new people. This is a great opportunity to learn new things to take home and experience real Costa Rica. On top the Working Student Program has founded a charity project to teach local kids a new way of understanding horses. We also teach English in the local school. 

There is a wide range of activities you can get busy while working on our farm. After our weekly meeting Volunteers can choose their jobs from the following areas:

  • Care for horse herd: cleaning open stable, moving horses to fields, feeding, grooming, training, riding, teaching kids lessons, trail rides
  • Care for other animals like: chickens, dogs, cats etc.
  • General farm work: repairing fences, landscaping, gardening
  • Handcrafts: building wooden furniture 
  • House care and food preparation 
  • Get involved in our Guesthouse and gain expirience in hostitality
  • Teach english at the local school  

The farm is operated by a German-Nicaraguan family that loves the pura vida lifestyle. Isa is a professional Natural Horsemanship trainer, working and riding horses all her live and beeing very fortune to make her passion her live and study together with great horse(wo)mans like Silke Vallentin and Kerri April. Milton has grown up on a horse farm in Nicaraguas deep jungle. He is an absolut handyman and knows how to build from scatch petty much everthing from furniture to houses using bamboo and wood, steel and stone. 

You will be living on site in a shared apartment. Volunteers can use a kittchen and prepare their food together. Also their is a libary, study room, big living rooms, jungle terrace with hammoks, big botanical gardens, greenhouse, pool, and loads of jungle mountains around. The farm is located on the edge of a small village called Atirro, where there is a little shop and soda. From here you can take a bus to Turrialba. 

 What we require

Short Term Stay (Natural Horsemanship Holiday)

Typical day

We use the early morning hourse to feed horses, mug out and get breakfast ready. After a full hearty breakfast we have our daily meeting where we discuss what is planned for the day. As there are many different project you can choose from to work in your day depends on what you have signed up for. Sure the horses will be groomed and grained before we had to the plaza and learn either on the ground or riding. There will be a big siesta from 12-3pm before we start the afternoon activities and work in the project that we have had planned together (like: built toys for horses, renovate a place, built furniture, do generall farmwork etc.). Dinner will be prepared by the evening. And we love to spend our evening watching educational videos or just listening to the jungle sound. 

Details on Arrival

We will pick you up at SJO airport in San Jose. YOU can find the flight that fits you best but sure can ask us if there is already a pick up scheduled as the airport is about 2,5 hr from the farm.

The program starts monday every 2 weeks.

Free-time activities

Swim with horses in the river, pool, library, loads of educational material on Natural Horsemanship, local markets, visit handcraft sugar factory, white water rafting, kayak tour, beach trips, waterfalls, local events etc.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 16 years old on the program start date.
Language Skills
You need to speak English (basic level)
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
horse expirience is a plus but not a must. Beginners are welcome
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 06:00 - 18:00

Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. We assist you to find cheap flights to Costa Rica.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Costa Rica provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Costa Rica you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Costa Rica.

Average fees

You can volunteer at the project site in Turrialba/Costa Rica between 4 weeks and 50 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Aventura Doma Natural will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Costa Rica.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with {project.name} during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
