Work along with locals and other international volunteers to provide a safe environment for these giants as they normally live in restricted areas or semi-captive situations. Participate in researches and feel the satisfaction of giving back to a great cause. South Africa’s habitats are diverse and through conservation and your help we can help to protect and restore these habitats. Learn conservation techniques and help educate the locals on the importance of conservation and what they can do to make a difference. This volunteer experience is great for those wanting to get away from their everyday lives but still have all the amenities at hand. There are numerous shops and restaurants to indulge in and countless exciting outdoor activities including wildlife viewing, shark cage diving and is even close to the highest bridge bungee jump in the world!

This project is located in Knysna, South Africa where you will have access to all amenities including wifi and electricity. Surrounded by magnificent beaches, lagoons and mountains, this location offers volunteers the chance to enjoy the many restaurants, markets and shops. There are many activities that are famous with the many tourists that you can participate in. These include visiting animal parks, game reserves, shark cage diving, bungee jumping and so much more!

You will stay in a basic but clean and comfortable volunteer house with a dorm style sleeping arrangement. This house has great views over the mountains and you will have access to a communal kitchen and lounge area with TV/DVD player, hot water showers and electricity and free wifi and computer access. There is also a barbecue (braai) area and hammocks for you to enjoy. If you need, private and family rooms are available on request.

You will volunteer alongside other international volunteers and local experienced staff who will train and guide you during your stay. There are no specific requirements or equipment needed to participate in this program.


Typical day

For a minimum of two weeks you will help make a difference to sustainable conservation projects in South Africa. Many volunteers venture into this project to help conserve South Africa’s diverse and beautiful habitats. For these projects to remain active, your help along with other volunteers is definitely needed and greatly appreciated. You will encounter elephants in close proximity and also help to educate the locals on the importance of conservation. You will be involved in a number of conservation projects and depending on what you are involved in some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Assist at an Elephant sanctuary and help to provide a safe habitat for these amazing animals.
  • Help with on-going behavioral research.
  • Assist in protecting the habitats within the area.
  • Work on environmental restoration projects.
  • Assist with a recycling exchange incentive scheme for children.
  • Educating the community about conservation and nature.
You will work from 6:30 to 15:30 with a short lunch break. There might be some night observation work too. All volunteers work for half day on Fridays and enjoy a cultural activity in the afternoons. Details on Arrival

There are no specific start dates. The project is available year round however the project closes in mid-December to mid-January. (Arrivals are every second Saturday).

Free-time activities

Volunteers have the opportunity to go hiking, sightseeing, and so much more! However, please be reminded that any other leisure time activity apart from what the project offers will be at the volunteer's own expense.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

The Fee includes:


  • Accommodation - Dorm style sleeping accommodation in a basic but clean and comfortable volunteer house.
  • Meals - Three meals a day will be provided.
  • Airport Pick + Drop off - You can either fly to Johannesburg or Cape Town where you will catch a connecting flight to GEORGE (GRJ), the nearest airport to the project. The project coordinator will meet you and take you to the project. Upon your completion of the project, the project coordinator will take you to the airport. If you choose to take a bus from Cape Town or Johannesburg to have a better view of the area, we will help to arrange your bus ticket which will be at no extra cost.
  • Ongoing service and 24/7 Emergency Contact

Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in Cape Town. We assist you to find cheap flights to South Africa.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for South Africa provides security and is a plus to have.

Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in South Africa.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment must be made up to 30 days before to the volunteer program starts. This payment is also securely handled by PayPal or credit card.
