About the program

Volunteer in Ghana as a volleyball coach and give hundreds of children the chance to play and enjoy the game in a fun environment. Coaching volleyball to children in Ghana is a great way to volunteer in Ghana, meet new people and discover a breath-taking part of Africa.

Volleyball is one of Ghana’s next up-and-coming sports and there has been a significant increase in the number of players joining the sport in the last few years. Although Ghana does not have a history of mass participation in Volleyball, there is an ever increasing passion to play volleyball in the schools and universities. Ghana also boasts a structured league system with a number of decent club teams training and competing on a regular basis. This has helped fuel the emergence of a much improved national squad with a number of very talented players.

If you have played or coached volleyball in the past, and have lots of enthusiasm for the game, you will be able to make a very positive change on Ghanaian volleyball, be it at the grassroots end of the game or even at national level.

Volleyball Volunteer Placement
Placement will involve coaching sessions in schools, clubs and some universities. The work in schools is at the lower end of the game and you will be able to coach in universities and clubs as well. Depending on your confidence and coaching experience, you will also have opportunities to coach and train with the national Volleyball squad. Most of your players will come from poorer backgrounds, never having had the chance to play volleyball before. By volunteering in Ghana, you will therefore give a number of children access to the sport, either to enjoy it as a fun hobby, or to nurture raw talent that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Typical day

Your role will be actively involved in coaching sessions, helping to develop skills as well as introduce new techniques and ideas. Creativity is key and this project is certainly no exception; any new ideas, suggestions and advice you are able to bring along to your sessions will always be very well received. The children always like to try new things so don’t be afraid to introduce new exercises and drills.

Volunteers are encouraged to organise and participate in matches and tournaments for the end of your placement; this is always a fantastic way to end your volunteer placement and a great goal for you and your teams to work towards throughout your stay. These young players are always desperately seeking the opportunity to show off their skills and play against fellow teams both in schools and local clubs, so you can be guaranteed plenty of excitement and enthusiasm at the prospect of a match.

Occasionally Volunteer may be asked to help out at the volunteer projects during weekends if a tournament or special event is taking place, this is always great fun and a great opportunity.
