New Hope For Disadvantaged Young Women

Young woman & mothers are trained as tailors, so they can live an independant life. This project is part of an NGO which was founded by a former street child.

The Project

“New Hope for Street Youth of Arusha” was founded by the Tanzanian Ayubu Kazana in 2013. Ayubu's parents died when we was very young and he was raised without them. He got his primary education in Kenya and only went to secondary school in Tanzania. Currently he is working as a medical representative and wants to support children and youth in need. The German association "Hilfe für Afrika Hilden e.V." ("Help for Africa") under Engelbert Kremers supported the young adults with health insurance, renting land and an office and donated sewing machines.

Ayubu is also supervising two other projects within the NGO. "New Hope For Disadvantaged Young Men" and "New Hope For Disadvantaged Children" can be found on Volunteer World as well. 

New Hope Women Empowerment

About seven young women are getting trained as tailors. The women are coming from various backgrounds like being homeless, working as day labourer or prostitutes and being/used to be drug addicts. One tailor is supervising them. At the moment they are having three sewing machine. One of the women is currently going to school and completing her secondary education.

Your Work

 It is possible to shift between the different projects withing the NGO. In general setting up a website and doing fundraising can be an essential part of your work. In particular you will help to teach the girls sewing and assist in tailoring. Also here you can teach and give computer lessons and English, as well as getting engaged in product development, creating new designs and do marketing.

Previous knowledge

You don't need any previous knowledge but it could be helpful if you have a background or interest in sewing, product development, design, marketing, teaching and/or fundraising.

Important

The young adults are coming from various backgrounds like poverty, drug abuse and prostitution. You should be sensitive and open-minded.

Typical day

A typical day depends on the project you are working in as well as your skills and interest.

Within the tailoring project you will work from around 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. You will assist the girls in sewing and tailoring and as always depending on your interest you can teach English, computer lessons, life skills, you can create a website, do marketing and fundraising and be totally creative!

Services

What's included?
All pre-arrival support, two airport transfers, orientation tour in Arusha, taking to the project on the first day, donation to the youth project, 24/7 in country-support, accommodation in a dorm, breakfast and dinner, lunch is usually provided in the projects.
What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.

Airport Pickup

In your program fee the pick up and drop off from/to the airport/bus station are inculded. Martin, the founder of Viva Tanzania will be at the airport/bus stand with our "Viva Tanzania"-Pick up sign just in time when you plane lands/your bus arrives. And after your volunteer experience, when it's time to say good bye we will take you to the airport/bus stand for the farewell.

Accommodation

The hostel has different dorms; each contain comfortable beds & shelves to store belongings. Accommodation in a single room possible (extra charge). The hostel is located 25 walking minutes from the city center. Although the hostel is close to the busy town the house is surrounded by a green environment. In the garden there are different fruits. Bella, Luna & Takwa, the three dogs are part of the family. The house is equipped with hot water showers and the possibility to use the kitchen.

Food & Beverages

Breakfast will contain tea and coffee, bread, margarine, honey, jam, peanut butter, as well as fruits and vegetable. Dinner will be international as we cook Tanzanian as well as Western Food. Don‘t worry if you are vegetarian (like Tizia), vegan or have any allergy, we can cope with everything. The hostel is also equipped with a fridge and shelves to store your own groceries.

You can volunteer at the project site in Arusha/Tanzania between 2 weeks and 50 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Viva Tanzania will tell you your final price during your application process.

Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Viva Tanzania during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
