THE ​ROLE 

Street Child is seeking applications for individuals who would like to support the organisation through research in Sierra Leone. This can be an opportunity to broaden your research skills or as part of your University dissertation. Whether you take on an independent research project, support our existing research or assist our monitoring and evaluation team there are many opportunities to get involved in research to help evaluate and further our programmes. 

Supporting the overall effort of making our programmes grounded and led by evidence, this role allows a motivated individual to take on a significant study into a specific area of interest. We are looking for several different types of research to be done, ranging from short and smaller pieces of work to more time-consuming projects. 

TERMS 

The successful applicant must be prepared to live and work in austere conditions when required, and to travel independently to urban, rural and remote project sites. The applicant must be able to manage his or her work plan and report regularly to the team on progress, and will be considered a valued member of the team. 

Typical day

Working alongside the Street Child team, your key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing the research and implementation of projects; including travel to the field sites where necessary
  • Coordinating primary and secondary research at field sites using bespoke methodologies and methods, including appropriate tools for research with children, their communities and other relevant stakeholders
  • Monitoring and evaluating the progress of projects to ensure they are on target to reach the outlined timeframes and intended impact
  • Liaising and working in collaboration with local partners and stakeholders
  • Identifying potential local and international funders and writing in depth funding proposals to these organisations as required
  • Creating research papers based on data collected from the field which provide recommendations for Street Child and relevant stakeholders; these papers will form the basis for future research and initiatives
  • Conducting literature reviews on assigned issues, proposing frameworks for how these issues can be understood within Street Child
Usual working days are from Monday to Friday from 9AM to 6PM.

Other Skills
Strong academic credentials, preferably with a Masters’ degree in a related field
Experience with desk based research and preferably some field work experience
Excellent written and communication skills
Hard-working, pro-active and professional work ethic
Respectful of cultural differences and mindful of the position of a researcher
Keen to gain experience working in Africa and be immersed in local culture
Independent and able to make decisions with little guidance
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 09:00 - 18:00

Street Child (your host organization) provides consulting and is keen to answer all your questions. Once you reserved your spot, you will receive the contact details of your volunteer project.

On-site services

Services by Street Child

Flights and food are at the applicant’s own expense. Accommodation will be provided by Street Child at a fixed cost, and will require sharing rooms with another volunteer of any gender. A fundraising commitment will be required of the successful applicant, for which support will be provided by Street Child UK staff. Accommodation and transportation are included in the fee.

From airport to the project location, the pick up time will be agreed before arrival with the volunteer.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Lungi International Airport (FNA) in Freetown. We assist you to find cheap flights to Sierra Leone.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Sierra Leone provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Sierra Leone you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Sierra Leone.

You can volunteer at the project site in Makeni/Sierra Leone between 4 weeks and 12 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Street Child will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Sierra Leone.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with {project.name} during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
