Naturally Africa Volunteers

Pre-school Teacher & Childcare Supporter

Help provide introductory education for young learners before they start primary school. Take part in our pre-school feeding project.

In Malawi formal education begins in Primary School at age 6. Before this there is little access to early learner education. Formal pre-schools are usually limited to cities, leaving children in rural areas at a disadvantage. Transitioning from home life to full time education at 6 years old can be particularly challenging when children have not experienced education beforehand. We are supporting rural pre-schools where parents have joined together to try to provide an early education for their children. These schools are run by local volunteers and are significantly disadvantaged compared to formal pre-schools as they commonly have no access to teaching resources, toys, financial support or even a suitable building to congregate in.

The first nursery school we supported in the village in which our projects are based was initially run by one volunteer and had 100 children attending it. We are now helping by offering support from our volunteers which has made this number far more manageable. We have provided a colourful learning space and structured learning activities, which allow children to get used to an educational environment and give them a head start before primary school.  Support from volunteers has significantly improved this rural nursery school and with your support we can ensure this continues into the future.

Volunteer tasks include:

  • Teaching basic English including the alphabet, days of the week and shapes
  • Serving porridge to malnourished children daily as part of a feeding program
  • Recording weights of children to monitor their improvement
  • Promoting the benefits of good dental hygiene and teaching children how to brush their teeth

Since the start of this volunteer project, we have repainted the nursery to provide a colourful learning space and have provided toys and games that the children can play. More recently we have introduced a feeding program, providing a supplemented porridge mixture to tackle malnourishment. Breakfast times can get messy so the more help we have the better!

Your orientation will typically take place the day after arrival. This will include:

  • An introduction to Malawian culture
  • Basic local greetings
  • Your health and safety whilst in Malawi
  • An introduction to some of the project staff
  • Money and transportation in Malawi
  • An introduction and background to the teaching project
  • Workplace ethics
  • Weekend excursions and free time

In the afternoon of the orientation day, you will be taken on a familiarisation tour of the local area and nearest town, including the local market there. This will provide an opportunity to buy cheaply priced local material for wrap-around skirts if you need to.

Throughout your stay in Malawi you will have the support and guidance of your project co-ordinator, as well as the other project staff who you will be working alongside. They will provide competent assistance, advice and be able to answer any questions that you may have on a daily basis.

Typical day

As a pre-school volunteer you will assist in providing teaching sessions at pre-school in the mornings and extra-curricular activity clubs with primary school children in the afternoons. In the morning sessions you will teach basics such as days of the week, shapes, the alphabet, beginners English and keep the children entertained through games. Part of each session will be spent serving porridge to the 50-100 children in attendance and making sure each child has had enough food. The remainder of the session will be spent teaching dental hygiene and helping children to brush their teeth.

You will spend your afternoons at the local primary school leading extra-curricular clubs including sports, crafts, wildlife or extra English sessions. Those that are interested may also have the opportunity to take part in I.T education sessions.

Afternoon Activities

After having spent the morning at the nursery, you can then assist in various local community projects in the afternoon. Dependent on experience and interests, you can get involved in the following projects:

  • Library Workshops - Daily workshops for primary school aged children in the local library. Most sessions will involve giving children the opportunity to do things they would not usually have the chance to do such as colouring in, making things or doing puzzles and games.
  • Conservation and Wildlife - Educate pupils on conservation and how to preserve and protect the wildlife of Malawi.
  • Sports - Afternoon sports sessions include a range of different sports, the most popular being football and volleyball. There are also more informal games sessions such as ball games, skipping or parachute games, which the children love!
