Primary school teacher

As a volunteer in primary teaching in Kenya you will help to empower boys and girls by giving them the skills they need to overcome poverty and make their voice heard.

Cheap Impact is a French registered non-profit organisation that operates at, and for, the Korando Educational Center (KEC) in Kisumu, Kenya – a poor neighborhood with low employment opportunities and low levels of education in the community. This non-formal school provides free education to 200 children and also sponsors older children to go to public secondary school and where possible, university. While public schools in Kenya are ‘free’, the additional cost of uniforms, supplies and transport can be too much for families living with low or no income. The KEC focus on more than a basic curriculum, they also teach the children environmental sustainability and awareness, social and economic empowerment and women’s rights. The teachers at KEC are people from the village who are educated, but have not had the opportunity to have had any formal training in teaching. Cheap Impact and KEC would like to attract volunteer teachers to the school to help up-skill current teachers and further develop the curriculum for the students.

The volunteer teachers have a huge impact for this community. They help giving boys and girls the knowledge they need to overcome poverty and make their voice heard. The volunteers do not only teach the core subjects, but design and create activities to raise their awareness about diverse topic and foster their sense of curiosity. Their role is also to support the children that need extra care and ensure that the kids receive more personal attention and tutelage.
