Prison Outreach

Kampala, Uganda show on map

Non-profit | ACO Africa

Our volunteers work with prisoners including juveniles. Give them hope by educating them about their rights and possible prospects. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
There is a great deal of judgement around men and women in prisons but many prison inmates are in this situation due to either ignorance of the law or an unjust court system. Furthermore, the situation in prisons concerning human rights is a great challenge, with the majority of inmates being unaware of their rights or unable to access them. ACO Africa’s joint Prison Outreach Programme with Mityana Uganda Charity aims to create legal rights awareness among inmates - this is the first step in improving the conditions in prisons. We also offer support through counselling sessions ranging from psychological to spiritual counselling, and we provide training on the basic skills needed to survive inside prison and after release. We aim to empower and rehabilitate these prisoners to promote a real change in their lives.

Our Program
Our volunteers taking part in the Prison Outreach program will be working with prisoners including juveniles and inmates. Volunteers will provide prisoners with counseling sessions on topics ranging from human rights, legal education, basic life skills and life in and after prison. This is done with support of professional legal persons and social workers.

Our Volunteers
Our program is ideal for volunteers that like to get a hands on experience in caring prisoners and that have a kind heart, open mind and a sharing attitude. They should be interested in interaction with this vulnerable group in our deprived communities.

Volunteers also get direct contribution to our support and care cause to give this vulnerable group a “second chance” to rebuild their hope. The environment is super supportive and volunteers will work with a team of like-minded and professional people like community development officers, lawyers, social workers, psychologists/counselors and health workers.

Amongst others, you should be
  • Ready to work with prisoners (inmates)
  • Ready for a very fragile community (changing characters)
  • Willing to work long hours and on weekends incase a need arises.
  • Emotionally strong
The working hours
Volunteers in this program normally work Monday-Friday. The hours vary from 5-6 hours per day. The total hours that you are expected to be "on the job", in various activities, is 20-30 hours per week. However, there are some cases where it is extended up to the weekends (Saturdays and Sundays).

Typical day

The daily tasks of our volunteers can vary from day to day, but in general they are as follows

  • Organizing and training on human rights, legal education
