Program Assistant

HOOP is looking for a new Program Assistant to join our successful team. Must be fluent in English.

As HOOP’s Program Assistant you will become an integral part to the development and management of HOOP’s projects, from strategic planning of the NGO’s activities, organising health outreach programs to reporting on the impact of our education program.

This is a varied role requiring good organisation, hard work, and a passion for reducing systemic inequality through a small but impactful education and community project in Peru.

Skills required:

  • Approachable and personable to build effective relationships with the HOOP team, volunteers and the community where we work
  • Good time management and ability to organise your workload effectively
  • Ability to manage, process and present data for evaluation using software such as Microsoft Excel
  • Creative and resourceful, to be able to work in a development environment with limited resources
  • Flexibility to demonstrate the ability to respond to frequently changing needs of the organization and community
  • Commitment to the mission of HOOP and achieving the project vision
  • Fluent English
  • Upper intermediate to advanced Spanish preferred

Typical day

  • Contribute to the improvement and development of our program areas, including education, health, nutrition, hygiene and business classes
  • Research new program areas
  • Impact reporting, monitoring and evaluation
  • Research and organisation of community outreach initiatives e.g. health days, workshops addressing issues in the community
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and weekly volunteer coordination meetings

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 21 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s).
Language Skills
You need to speak English (fluently) and Spanish (basic level)

Free-time activities

Arequipa is a beautiful city of about 1 million people. It is known as "The White City", because of the distinct white volcanic rock called sillar that was used to build Arequipa’s historical town. The city is very beautiful and is surrounded by Misti, Piccu Piccu and Chanchani volcanoes. The weather is very sunny and pleasant all year-round. The altitude is high, over 2,328 metres. The climate is dry and there are 300 days of sunshine per year. Arequipa is a touristy city so the the nightlife is very active and lively. There are many markets, bars, restaurants and cultural sights to explore. People from Arequipa are known for being friendly and it's a great place to learn or practice Spanish.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. An airport pickup isn't included within the program fees either. Please arrange your own accommodation. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.

Average fees

You can volunteer at the project site in Arequipa/Peru between 12 weeks and 24 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. HOOP Peru will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with HOOP Peru during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
