Help save sea turtles by patrolling beaches, securing sea turtle nests, and assisting with environmental education. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

The Project

During this project, you will volunteer at a park that was started in 1993. Its objective is to protect Leatherback and Olive Ridley turtle populations from overharvesting by local egg collectors. Despite being endangered, nearly all sea turtle nests in Guatemala are harvested for eggs and sold in restaurants and markets.

The park covers 3 hectares of the beach, and is currently negotiating with governments to establish a 3,500-hectare protected area centered in the mangrove wetlands of the area. At the center, over 12,000 eggs were safely collected and protected in 1997, 10,000 in 1998, 14,500 in 1999, and over 16,000 in 2000. This has made it one of the most important hatcheries in Guatemala.

In addition to protecting wildlife, the park also carries out educational activities such as lectures on littering, ecology, and endangered species. It also promotes interactive events, such as beach clean-ups and baby turtle release "races" at local schools.

Your Tasks

The center not only attempts to conserve the wildlife of the area, but it also tries to offer local residents economic alternatives to improve the quality of their lives through its educational activities and health projects.

On a typical work day, you will patrol the beaches, secure sea turtle nests, and collect eggs. Other tasks may include providing environmental education to tourists and locals, mangrove reforestation, and replanting trees and plants. Cayman and iguana breeding, feeding the animals, and helping with community projects may be part of your duties, too.

Free-time activities

In your spare time, there are many different activities to choose from, such as hiking around the center, getting your tan on at the beaches, or swimming in the ocean. There are also bars and internet cafes in the nearby town of Monterrico.
