Rainbow Centre Assistant

Urubamba, Peru show on map

Volunteers provide classroom support within the school and help in our therapy centre aiding the Therapy Team, working one-on-one with the students and supporting staff.

The Rainbow Centre works in conjunction with the Arco Iris School, a local primary school in the Urubamba area for students with special needs and disabilities. The Centre runs the therapy programme within the school and provides a dedicated Therapy Team of professionals, including a Physiotherapist, Psychologist and Social Worker, as well as a cook to provide all the children with a daily hot meal and a Maintenance Manager who takes care of the grounds and security.

Children with disabilities and special needs can face a great deal of prejudice in Peru and there have always been very limited services on offer in the local area to provide them with the support they so vitally need! The Rainbow Centre has been running since 2001 to provide a safe and happy environment for children born to be different to grow and develop whilst receiving the compassion, care and therapy we believe all children should be entitled to! Our volunteer programmes contribute a huge help to the running of the Rainbow Centre and it's always wonderful to receive hands-on help with the children!

When you arrive to the Rainbow Centre your Kiya Coordinator will give you an induction to working at the school and provide tips and training for those who do not have previous experience working in the special needs education sector.

Project work consists of classroom support during the children's lesson time and supervising the children over the lunch break, aiding those who need help with eating and participating in recreational activities afterwards - they often enjoy playing volley ball or outside games and doing jigsaws or building blocks in wet weather.

Part of your programme here will also be to help assist our therapists at the Rainbow Centre to administer physiotherapy and speech and language therapy to the students here.  The role of our NGO is to provide the therapy resources and practitioners for the children who attend the Arco Iris school but we do like to work as a close team with the school teaching taff so our Kiya team including any volunteers who are working with us also take part in any events in the school calendar, which is always good fun for all involved! Volunteers will be expected to take part in celebration days and events at the school or community activities the school takes part in.

We can tailor your programme to suit your own skills and interests so if volunteers have a particular interest in music, art or sport for example, the teaching staff would be happy to accommodate a workshop that you could organise for our students to play to your particular skill set.

Volunteers at the Rainbow Centre also have the opportunity to participate in our Outreach Programme which offers home support to families living on the brink of poverty in the local Andean communities.

You can accompany our Therapy Team on home visits and aid with at-home physiotherapy sessions, participate in running parent workshops and get involved in the construction work of one of our bathroom building projects.

We provide new bathroom builds including a functional flushing toilet and working shower system to families who have been living without any access to running water at home to dramatically improve home hygiene facilities, improve health and inhibit the spread of disease. Our Kiya Volunteers can assist with all stages of the construction process, from initial assessments of the family, to laying foundations, digging trenches for water pipes, laying the brick walls of the bathrooms and fitting the roofing and installing the toilet and shower facilities. Kiya bathroom building projects bring life-changing sanitation improvements to local families living in poverty in remote rural areas and provide them with a long-term solution for better caring for their families needs.

Typical day

Volunteers daily schedule is to arrive at the Rainbow Centre for the start of the school day at 8.30am and work on-site with the children and staff team until the school day finishes at 1.00pm. You will assist the teachers by providing classroom support, working directly with the students some of whom have severe learning difficulties and complex behavioural issues so really do benefit from one-on-one support. You can shadow the Therapy Team and assist them in their work with their patients during the school day.

In the afternoons volunteers can participate in our Outreach Programme and accompany the Kiya Team on home visits or with one of our bathroom builds and also help our management team with admin assistance.

Details on Arrival

Our aim is to provide consistent and ongoing support for the children and communities we work with therefore our projects run all year round and volunteers are welcome to join us at any point in the year for any length of time.

Please be aware that it's Peruvian school vacation at the end of July until mid-August and then a longer break from Christmas until mid-March so the school itself will be closed but our Therapy Team will still be working within the community on home visits and our Outreach Project.

Free-time activities

We are based in the heart of the Sacred Valley so there are loads of fascinating Incan ruin sites for you to visit in your free time. Our Coordinators can arrange guided tours for you at a discounted price or just help you buy an entrance ticket so you can go and explore for yourself! Machu Picchu is very popular with most of our volunteers and we can book a day tour or the 2 or 4 day treks at your request. There are loads of opportunities in the Valley to go mountain climbing and hiking and there are plenty of yoga workshops on offer in the nearby town of Pisac. There are other activities available in the area including horse riding, kayaking and quad biking. The city of Cusco is just over an hour away and has museums, some great restaurants and a busy nightlife. There are artisanal markets selling beautiful handmade goods and handicrafts in Cusco, Pisac and our neighbouring town Ollantaytambo for those who like to browse! If you're into craft beer we have a great local brewery just outside Urubamba which is well worth a visit.
