Rainforest Conservationist

Protect the rainforest - help maintain forest trails and reforestation work. Take care of the guests and accompany excursions.

The project

The lodge where you will realize your volunteer work is located 35 km southwest of Limón, not far from the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. On about 850 hectares a German-founded Costa Rican eco-lodge provides ecotourism and conservation programs. Their land is next to se famous national park 'La Amistad', which ist known for its incredible biodiversity.

Guests from all over the world come to the eco-lodge to enjoy the nature and the cozy lodging, and to make excursions to the rainforest (on horseback or on foot).

The main interest of the founders is the protection of the animals and the environment in which they live. The project area is kind of a private nature reserve. Thanks to a water conservation project in the Limón district about 70,000 people have access to clean drinking water

You will learn a lot to understand the rainforest, the natural habitat of thousands of exotic animals and plants.

Work tasks

Support of the "guardabosques" (the forest guards) 

  • Cleaning of the forest paths of growths as well as garbage
  • Creation of new forest trails 
  • Signpost and maintain the paths and trails 
  • Regular patrols to watch and observe the flora and fauna 
  • Collect data of different plants and animals 
  • Observation of exotic mammals and birds in the nature
  • Reforestation 

Support in the tourism area and eco-lodge

  • Take care for the guests 
  • Offer activities and excursions to the rainforest 
  • Accompany activities and excursions to the rainforest (as an assistant of a guide or as a translator) 
  • Take care and feed the horses of the lodge.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 17 years old on the program start date.
Language Skills
You need to speak Spanish (basic level)
Nationality Restrictions
No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 09:00 - 16:00

What's NOT included?

No worries, Volunteer World supports you in raising funds, checking your visa regulations and travel insurance. We also assist you in finding the cheapest flights for your journey.
Airport Pickup

The transport service will pick you up at the San Jose airport and bring you to an accommodation where you will stay overnights.
On the next day the transport service picks you up at the accommodation to bring you to the bus station for your journey to the project site (aprox. 4 hours).

Accommodation

You will share a small, typical houses (cabañas) with other volunteers and/or staff. In one cabaña there is space for 2 to 4 people. All the cabañas are equipped with a bathroom.

You can volunteer at the project site in Samará/Costa Rica between 3 weeks and 25 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. South America Inside will tell you your final price during your application process.
Average Fees
$300/week
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with South America Inside during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
