This organisation was founded in order to give free medical care to people with chronic ilnesses and disabilities in the capital of Ecuador, Quito. Years after the medical centre was founded another facility was created in order to help adults and children who suffer from down syndrome, autism, speech difficulties, psychological problems and other special needs. Patients here are often from a very poor background and need the free healthcare, volunteers are very crucial in keeping this project running with volunteers coming locally and from around the world.
When caring for these patients volunteers require a lot of patience and empathy, it is essential that you are very active and creative as you will often have to participate in activities. Throughout your stay you will build relationships with both colleagues and patients this helps to create a fun atmosphere. Workers should be very flexible as the demands of the project are constantly changing.
When working you will assist in: Language therapy, Physical therapy, Health programs, Teaching different subjects, Recreational activities, Sports and Preparing meals.
On a typical day your tasks will include, assist with the daily morning physical therapy to develop the patients writing and drawing capabilities, you will then help with teaching of subjects, prepare and help feed patients during meal times, while planning and participating in many games.
Once a week, you will accompany the patients and staff to their therapeutic horse riding or swimming sessions that are very effective in treating people with disabilities.
In your spare time the city of Quito has many different activities to choose from such as regular music events, it is also home to many bars and restauraunts where you can socialise with other volunteers.
In this project you will stay with a local family situated very close to the facilities. You will live in a private bedroom, but with shared bathrooms and living areas, this is a great way to learn the countrys culture and learn spanish.
