Restoration Worker for Natural Habitat

San Cristobal Island, Ecuador show on map
Help eradicate invasive vegetation and fix paths while enjoying the breathtaking nature of the Galapagos Islands. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

The Project

This volunteer program is located on the higher part of San Cristobal Island, one of four populated islands of the Galapagos. The island has a lot to offer, such as banks, ATMs, cafés, restaurants, internet, shops, travel agencies, and many places where excursions are offered regularly.

The main focus of this project is the eradication of invasive flora, which is done by cutting plants, such as blackberries, and replanting native species. Invasive plants are causing a series of problems on the islands, as they are overtaking areas that used to be covered by native plants. The local wildlife depends on the native plants to survive. Due to the region’s very fragile ecosystem, volunteers are needed year-round to help maintain and preserve the island.

Your Tasks

This volunteer project aims to maintain the current infrastructure of the island, such as trails and fences, which are very important due to the number of tourists that visit the Galapagos Islands.

On a typical work day, you will maintain trails and fences, assist in taking tourists on educational tours, collect samples from surrounding areas, care for the vegetable garden, and maintain the kitchen and volunteer house.

With this project, you have the opportunity to work in one of the world’s most famous travel destinations, while also helping to sustain the ecosystem. This is a very rewarding opportunity, and volunteers should have a positive attitude that contributes to a fun work environment.

Free-time activities

There are many different activities to choose from during your stay on the Galapagos Islands, such as hiking through nature and admiring some of the best views the world has to offer. In addition, you can snorkel to have a look at the diverse species of fish surrounding the island.
