Rieko Kenya

Rural Construction Support

Migori County, Kenya

Our construction programs provide infrastructure to our rural communities. Volunteers are a valuable contribution to these projects and can learn about development.

Rieko Kenya is a not-for-profit organization first established as a community-based organization in the year 2007 before acquiring its  NGO registration status in 2010.  The organization’s goal is to alleviate poverty and to amplify the voice of the disadvantaged and “poor” communities in Kenya.

Rieko Kenya is working in three thematic focus areas: Environment, Education, and Health. In education, Rieko Kenya is partially supporting orphans and vulnerable children. The support includes a provision of books, medical checkups, uniforms, school supplies, teacher fees, meals and other needed items. The organization is mobilizing and organizing community care coalitions to enhance sustainability and ownership of its interventions. most importantly, the organization is working to equip these orphans and vulnerable children with educational facilities that include classrooms, water tanks, toilet, computer labs, libraries and other required infrastructures.

The children to be supported by this project are mainly orphans and vulnerable children of ages between 3- 18 years. This project is located in Nyatike sub-county, Migori County, Nyanza province in western parts of Kenya. According to the National AIDS Control Council, (NACC), 11 percent (1.66 million) of Kenyan children have lost either or both parents to HIV. In addition to orphans, there are increasing numbers of other vulnerable children who are also in need.  Nationally, there are about 600,000 children who are not orphans but who are also particularly vulnerable because their parents or guardians are sick and are not able to adequately provide for their safety and development.

Majority of the local populace of Nyatike Sub County is made up of poor and marginalized people with over 70% of them living below less than $2 a day. The lives of Nyatike Sub County populace where this project intervenes have been threatened by the high death rate to HIV/AIDS-related diseases. It has been estimated that the scourge has led to about 7,000 orphans in Nyatike Sub County alone (Nyatike Sub County Health Survey, 2010). A number of these orphans are themselves vulnerable or born with the virus and develop many Opportunistic infections as a result of their status. They have special physical & psychological needs which may not be adequately met by the local community that is already overburdened by oppression, poverty, disease, and hunger. This is particularly true for the target community where few social support systems exist outside families and where basic social services are largely inadequate.

Rieko Kenya strives to meet the needs of the poorest of the poor and the most marginalized communities. Children orphaned by AIDS creates an additional burden to the already constrained family resources, they need food, shelter, medical care, clothing, psychological support and above all schooling. While the extended family the region has traditionally fostered orphaned children, the high incidence of HIV infection and the growing number of children left in its wake has already overwhelmed the traditional care structures in the region. Where extended family is unable to cope, some families are being led by children as young as 10-12 years.

It is in this regard that Rieko Kenya is keen to work collaboratively with volunteers or interns to support the construction of required educational facilities for the orphans and vulnerable children. Currently, the orphans and vulnerable children being supported are studying in a pathetic situation. The makeshift classrooms they are currently using are seriously overcrowded and do not meet standards required by the ministry of education and that of physical planning.

On the other hand, some people are disadvantaged or vulnerable due to being widowed, living with HIV/AIDS, poverty, disability or chronic illness. Such situation may necessitate external assistance in constructing for a habitable house or home.

In all cases, the Volunteers work together with the local community. The local community will provide all raw and locally available materials and provide part of the labor while volunteers providing financial support to secure hardware materials. The hardware materials and tools for working can always be bought locally in Kenya.

Construction volunteering means just that – construction! How much you get involved with the charity building work is entirely up to you, your capabilities, experience and willingness to assist.

Rieko Kenya currently has two types of construction volunteering programs in Kenya: school construction, and home construction for the poor, the elderly, and the disadvantaged.

Our program for construction volunteers is intended for volunteers looking to financially contribute to infrastructure projects and build awareness about development projects in their home countries. The Volunteers will be required to raise adequate or enough money for the construction of the planned educational infrastructure or house for disadvantaged persons. Our volunteers are then personally engaged in the building process, so they can see what their money has contributed to and the true impact of these projects. Program lengths vary on the type of project you and your team decide to work on, and how much time commitment you are personally able to make. We appreciate any time commitment you are able to make and recommend a minimum 3-week stay to be able to see your project to completion.

Highlight: Classroom Construction
Classroom space is often limited to offer educational outreach programs. To date we have worked on a number of primary and secondary school construction projects in the area, serving a variety of populations.

The school construction volunteering placements are driven by the amount of money fund-raised for this placement, as both time and financial resources are needed for construction. USD$1000 can build one classroom, and with USD$10,000 you and your group can rebuild an entire school.  The more you can fundraise, the more you can assist in providing suitable environments for children to learn in. We can guarantee that wherever you volunteer, you will have an unforgettable experience.

Typical day

Your day to day activities will vary depending on the nature of your construction project, and your interests in the area. We recommend our construction volunteers visit some of Rieko's other projects to be able to see the full scope of our work and to get to know the local community better.
