Abetifi, Ghana show on map

Running the scholarship programme within our charity foundation.

About The Placement

The charity foundation that we work alongside with 'Bryan Acheampong Foundation' is lucky enough to be able to offer 1000 scholarships to the local Abetifi Presbyterian University to provide the local populace an opporunity to complete higher education and further develop the local area. You will be based in the foundation office working with the other department programme managers which are employed by the foundation. The areas we are developing cover a wide range of topics such as education, healthcare, sports, water and sanitation etc. With yourself setting up the scholarship scheme, you will be working alongside the education department to ensure the best and most deserving applicants are selected.

Why This Placement?

Due to the introduction of the scholarship scheme to our foundation we now need a dedicated member of the team to handle all requests and reporting of this task. With the introduction of free senior high school in Ghana recently, it's now the best chance for a child to get through to further education. However many in our local area simply do not have the financial means or support to follow this dream. We aim to give this chance to these young adults and help them on their way to great things, with the extra intake of students we also hope it will bring organic development to Abetifi and the surroundings with a larger population and spend.

What Is Included In This Placement?

Although this placement is FREE of charge the following services are still included at no extra charge. This will include free accomodation and the use of the utilities, you will have use of the kitchen, electricity throughout the house and running water which is a luxury among the area of Kwahu. Daily transport to and from the project sites will also be covered for free by our organisation's vehicles. As well as the above mentioned we can also offer free airport collection upon your arrival and drop off on your return home, a member of the team will be waiting on your arrival and will accompany you to the volunteer house around three hours drive away.

How Do I Get To The Placement?

You will be living in a shared volunteer house with modern amenities, a member of staff will live on site and be able to offer any guidance or advice you may need. You will be taken to the project site in the morning and returned home in the afternoon for free by our organisation's vehicles. The town in which the volunteer house is based is fairly developed with local shops, restaurants, bars, banks and markets.

What Will I Be Doing?

Based in the foundation office you will work alongside other programme managers and officers employed locally by the charity. They focus on aspects such as education, healthcare, water and sanitation, sports etc.
Your task will be split into three main areas;
- Application Process: Managing all the applications for the scholarships and working with the university on reaching the target intake.
- Monitoring and Reporting: Producing reports to the foundation based on items such as attendance, results etc.
- Volunteering Schedule: Each student beneficiary will be required to give up one weekend a month to volunteer in a local community.

Who Will I Be Working With?

You will have sole focus on the scholarship scheme, however you will work under the Education Programme Manager and Foundation Director. You will also have regular dealings with the University admissions team and be expected to maintain a good relationship.

What Do We Expect From The Volunteers?

Relevant experience in admissions, recruitment or scholarship schemes would be preferred. The greatest traits of a volunteer are enthusiasm, empathetic and the ability to adjust to alternative cultures. You will get the most of our your trip by opening your mind to new experiences and beliefs whilst also bringing your own to the table.
We expect volunteers to visit their placements Monday - Friday, exceptions can be made for long weekends of travel etc but we hope for the children and yourselves to get the most of your placement this is kept to a minimum.
When working on the weekend for the volunteering events you may swap these days off for during the week.

What Can You Expect From Us?

We will be on hand any time of any day to support you in your placement and trip as a whole. There will always be someone you can speak to or get a hold of should you want to discuss anything or require any guidance, from organising after extra events to changing your placement. Our team living in the volunteer house will also be able to offer advice regarding travel plans and the local area so you will soon feel at home.

What Should I Bring?

We always need reading and story books to help establish a mobile library however for your placement if you bring a good set of stationary and enough items to setup a nice desk for yourself, you should be good to go!

What Happens During School Holidays?

As the school holidays will not directly affect this placement you will be entitled to normal annual leave with the other foundation staff however exceptions can be made if you wish to travel with the other volunteers for long weekends etc.

Accommodation

We currently have a three bedroom volunteer house located in the peaceful town of Pepease overlooking the rainforest. Later in the year we aim to move to a larger 13 bedroom house in a nearby town.

Bedrooms -
Bedrooms are shared usually between 2 - 3 people. Most bedrooms are a medium size and come with a mix of single, double or bunk beds. All doors and windows in the house are covered by mosquito netting or covered completely however you are more than welcome to bring a mosquito net for your bed although usually not necessary.

Bathrooms -
There are 3 shared bathrooms in the house so offer plenty of space and privacy during your stay. Most of the time we have the benfit of running water which is a local luxury so showers and toilets will work as usual. We ask to consider others when using the water as it's a valuable commodity in Ghana.

Kitchen -
We have one large kitchen with modern facilties such as gas stove, fridge freezer and a range of utensils. It is a self catered placement however plenty of food stuffs can be bought from the market such as bread, rice, pasta and many fresh ingredients. We also have connections with local people in the town who will be able to prepare your meals or teach you how to cook local dishes.

Living Room -
There is a large living room with sofas, TV and a dining set for use by the volunteers. Evenings are often spent in here and volunteers are welcome to bring DVDs or memory drives with movies to watch although local television channels are provided.

Garden -
Surrounding the house is a fenced garden, this offers privacy for relaxing in the sun or sitting out in the evenings. There is also a washing line space for volunteers to use.

Store Room -
We have a small store room where we keep left over teaching materials and resources for new volunteers to use. You are invited to leave any items you may not use here for the next person to continue the flow. Master copies of activity sheets or lesson plans are a key item we hope to see keep growing in the store.
