School Construction Assistant

Accra, Ghana show on map

Completion of an ongoing construction work on a six classroom block, library and Headteacher office. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

At the local basic school, some of the children learn under trees and in the event of rain, both teachers and students are left to the mercy of the weather. Many pupils drop out of school before reaching Primary 6, and of the number that progresses to that level or beyond, they have difficulties in reading and understanding basic arithmetic.

This is attributed to lack of adequate infrastructure; including provision of potable water, good sanitation and toilet facilities. Undoubtedly, most parent are increasingly becoming reluctant to send their children to school because in the end they are not impacted in any way that makes them better than before their enrollment. Instead children who ought to be in school are trafficked to engage in hazardous labour in the fishing industry to earn extra income for their families.

In collaboration with community leaders and the local school authority.Bridge Foundation is rehabilitating an existing old school infrastructure of the Kokrobite DA Basic School. Construction works of the  six-classroom block, library and Teachers’ Common Room has started and the project is about 50% completed. Work schedule for completion is as follows:

·       Block works from window level to lintel level

·       Plastering/Floor Tiling

·       Roofing Fixtures

.     Painting/Decoration

Volunteers'  work involves helping with work in any of the above stages.Although interested volunteers with working knowledge in carpentry,bricklaying/masonry,electrical etc are preferable; our program is flexible to accommodate multiple skills, provided that you want to use them. Apart from the volunteer's work, life in Ghana is relaxed and easy. By spending time with the locals you will learn about their elaborate festivals, the local cuisine, their colorful dresses and the music and dances.

Free-time activities

Ghana's towns and cities are busy and bustling, day and night. And even rural communities have their favourite local drinking spots which crack open the Stars, throw kebabs on the grill and open their doors as nightfall approaches. Sometimes, the challenge is finding out where the hottest, most happening joints are because a lot of events are word of mouth and do not appear in guide books or on tourism websites

Ghana is graced with 540km of stunning, sandy coastline. Most of it is undeveloped and many of its beaches are like private paradises waiting to be explored. Kokrobite, our project site is a small fishing village, about 30 km west of Accra. It is located on a long stretch of beach on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, and is a popular destination for tourists seeking sandy beaches. Its proximity to Accra makes it an ideal getaway for city dwellers. Langma is a few minutes' drive after Kokrobite.

In the capital city, Labadi beach attracts hundreds of beach-goers at the weekend. Drinking spots line the shore and there is often entertainment late into the evening.

The Ghanaian festivals are a colourful and vibrant part of the culture. Each year festivals and durbars are held in various parts of the country, to celebrate the heritage of the people.

Among the tourist sites one can visit at his/her free time is:

  • National Theatre
  • Independence Arch
  • Jamestown Light House
  • Gallery 1957

  • Du Bois Centre for Pan African Studies
