School Construction Helper

This program involves the construction of a school and training center in Bertoua, Cameroon. We need volunteers to help complete phase two of the building works.

We are currently accepting applications from volunteers interested in construction and outdoor work to join us for a school construction program in the town of Bertoua, located in the eastern region of Cameroon.

Why Rising Education?

Rising Education will provide direct support to those in need living in Bertoua by offering high quality, low to no cost education. Primary school completion rate in Cameroon is 78% for boys and 68% for girls. The average teacher to student ratio is 1:46. Over 15% of students repeat a grade. These statistics reveal the current reality in Cameroonian primary schools. In addition, children, especially girls, face a higher risk of illness by going to school. Cholera, diarrhea, and parasites are easily spread in schools due to the lack of proper sanitation.

Through the construction and administration of a multipurpose educational facility, Rising Education will improve this situation. Offerings will include preschool, primary school, and vocational skills education. In this way, youngsters and adults will gain access to needed education and training for future income possibilities. Additional facilities and training concerning proper hygiene and disease prevention will also improve the future health of every student and family attending the school.

Rising Education is a collaborative project initiated by The Hope Foundation, and 15 German architecture students from TU Berlin, Germany.

What have we achieved to date?

The Rising Education project advances at pace, with the project close to reaching the half-way point. The facility is anticipated to partially open in September 2017, and fully open the following year in anticipation of the 2018/19 school year.  Current work in Bertoua is focused on the construction of the main classroom building, with the construction of the sanitation system to begin shortly thereafter. Also in the making is a solar powered water system.

What working environment to expect?

Together with the students from Berlin, the local community and local workers and students, you will carry out activities such as producing bricks, raising walls, cutting wood, digging, painting etc.

Whom are we looking for?

For this project, hardworking and extremely flexible volunteers are needed. Be ready to be a team worker with a vision of bringing change and making an impact with your time and labour.

Benefits shall be good networks of exchange with students from around the world, the discovery of a new culture and style of living, the amazing summer weather, the good food around Bertoua and more.

Included Services

What's included?

Hope Foundation is an organization with limited financial resources; therefore, we require that each volunteer covers the cost of living during their stay in Cameroon, which we can arrange for both safety and comfort. In addition to arranging accommodation, Hope Foundation picks up and drops off volunteers from the airport, and provides three healthy meals a day for volunteers. All volunteers receive a free T-Shirt.

In the past ten years of receiving volunteers, this has proven to be both the easiest and most affordable way for volunteers to join us in Cameroon!

Airport Pickup at Yaoundé

A Hope Foundation staff member will pick up volunteers directly from the airport. It is about a 6 hour journey from the airport to Bertoua.

The types of accommodation vary from one project to the next and from one location to another. A high amount of flexibility is expected from volunteers when it comes to this juncture as living conditions are not always the same as they are in their home countries. Volunteers coming in groups usually live together in shared accommodations while individuals stay with host families, a culturally immersive experience which allows volunteers to integrate into the local Cameroonian community through food, dance, music, dressing, and general lifestyle!

Detailed information about the project accommodation including map(s) / photos, helpful links, will be available and sent to applicants by email.
