Bridging the gap through experimental learning of local and international volunteers in rural Kenya.

Mafanikio School development programme is currently running in Miwani Primary School in Kilifi county respectively.  The school has a total  of 200+ pupils and the programme is aimed at developing the infrastructures in this school.  Mafanikio supports the school through provision of text books, desks, school feeding programme and mentorship of the students.

Miwani Primary School

Miwani School is located in Ganda village, Malindi constituency, Kilifi County. It is approximately 2 hours from the city of Mombasa. Malindi is on the north coast of Kenya, a tourist destination that boasts of white sands beaches, unique features and historical sites.  Seedling is within the township of Malindi. 


Background information


Miwani has a population of 200+ who come from the surrounding villages.  The school is in the heart of the community and enjoys a spacious field with 4 classrooms out of which  two are makeshift.  The school has no toilet facility and has no water supply.  The children are forced to relieve themselves in the bushes and others share a very small makeshift toilet with the teachers.  

Due to increased numbers of students, the desks are no longer enough therefore, others are still sitting on the floor. It has 8 teachers who are very dedicated.

It is a community school that is run by the help of another public school.

Project description

The volunteers shall live and work together with the local communities while promoting inter-cultural interaction and integration.  Some of the activities include;

  • Sports activities
  • Community activities

  • Mentorship

Meals and Accommodation

The volunteers live with the host family where a private room is given and share meals and other facilities with the family.  Drinking water is in plenty.  There is running water and electricity.  Some of the meals include;

Rice
Vegetables etc.

Free-time activities

There are various free time activities that ranges from hiking, mountain climbing to home visitings. This are mainly done in Makueni hills, Ngong Hills & Aberdare forest.

Home visiting - visiting households within the community is a way of social interaction and cultural integration. During orientations, they also get to visit the National Museum of Kenya. Once in a while concerts are organized in cities and volunteers get tickets to the concert, a fulfiling experience, it is.

Whilst at it, the volunteers get to do safari to Masai Mara, Tsavo National parks and other national parks of interests. They also get to do marine park visit at the south coast while engaging in a warm culture of the Wasini Island community. Swimming with the dolphins, eating the swahili coastal dishes & coffee is a magical experience.

Program Requirements

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

2 days hotel stay (during orientation period in the city - meals are also covered)

Airport Pickup at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Our representative picks the volunteers at the airport with a placard bearing the logo and the name of the volunteer.

Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi. We assist you to find cheap flights to Kenya.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Kenya provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Kenya you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Kenya.

You can volunteer at the project site in Nairobi/Kenya between 3 weeks and 12 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Mafanikio Organization will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Kenya.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Mafanikio Organization during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
