School Development Assistance

Bridging the gap through experimental learning of local and international volunteers in rural Kenya.

Mafanikio School development programme is currently running in 2 schools in the counties of Makueni and Kilifi respectively.  The schools with a total number of 430 pupils are aimed at developing the infrastructures of Seedlings Junior School in Malindi and Makuli primary school in Ukia.  Mafanikio supports the two school with school feeding programme, teachers payment (seedlings) & learning materials.  We have also introduced a goat rearing project in Makuli School.

Seedlings Junior School, Malindi

Seedlings Junior School is located in Malindi town, Kilifi County. It is approximately 2 hours from the city of Mombasa. Malindi is on the north coast of Kenya, a tourist destination that boasts of white sands beaches, unique features and historical sites.  Seedling is within the township of Malindi.

Background information

Seedlings school  caters for the poor slum children who are either orphans or from single parenthood. It has a total population of 180 children with 7 teachers respectively. Some of these teachers are paid by the community.

The school has semi permanent buildings mostly shacks which are not conducive for learning because of the dangers they pose especially during the rainy season. The school has poor infrastructure and lacks learning materials.

Project description

The volunteers shall live and work together with the local communities while promoting intercultural interaction.  Some of the activities include;

  • Teaching Maths, English & Science
  • Sports activities
  • Community activities
  • construction work
  • Mentorship

Meals and Accommodation

The volunteers live with the host family where a private room is given and share meals and other facilities with the family.  Drinking water is in plenty.  There is running water and electricity.  Some of the meals include;

Tea/coffee

Bread

Chapati
Beans stew
Beef stew
Chicken
Rice
Vegetables etc.

Makuli Primary School

Makuli Primary is  located in Ukia location, Makueni county, approxmately 2 hours from the city centre of Nairobi.  It is in the semi arid area of the Makueni county which is from time to time affected adversely by drought and famine.  The school has a total of 280 children with 9 teachers respectively.

The major challenge in this school is lack of teachers, learning materials and food. During the drought season, children go to school without food and are forced to miss classes.  The project aims to address a sustainable project that shall support the school feeding programme and learning materials.

The project entails;

  • Teaching Maths, Science & English
  • Sports activities
  • Community activities
  • Mentorship

Just like in Malindi, the volunteer shall stay with a host family where they shall be provided with a private room and share the rest of the facilities with the host family together with the meals.

Makuli is in a remote area without electricity and running water.It is surrounded by scenic features and fresh air.  It is ontop of the mountain close to Makuli forest.
