Eco-Agric Uganda

School Gardening and Sports Assistant

Hoima, Uganda

The volunteer will work with rural schools to establish school gardens that will provide food for break and lunch to the orphans. Will also involve children in sports

The project

This program will empower children aged 5 to 17 to improve their livelihood and ensure their long-term food security by improving nutrition, agricultural knowledge, and life skills while building self-esteem and gender equality.

Uganda has many orphans that go to school with limited scholastic materials, are psychologically tortured with no food. Eco-Agric Uganda is promoting school gardening to establish gardens that can provide food to the orphans while they are at school, as a way of enhancing their learning. It is also promoting sports activities at school for psycho social support to help children feel loved and cared for. This will is expected to inspire the children to enjoy learning and acquiring creative skills that will help them throughout their lives in character development and productive living.

Volunteer work

The program involves working with volunteers who enjoy working with children and have the patience, love and understanding to support them on their journey towards being self-sufficient, independent and productive adults.

  • The volunteer will work with the children and school administration to establish school gardens.
  • The volunteer will work with the children at school to start a football and net ball team.
  • The volunteer will take part in organizing gardening and sports competitions among the different schools.
  • The winner will be given a goat and the volunteer will take part in cooking and eating the goat with the winners.

The volunteer will stay at the office for the first week to get used to the area and the different programs of the organisation. Then will be taken to five different schools where he will pick three schools to work with. The volunteer will work for three days a week working with the schools for at least three hours per day. At school, the volunteer will work with children and teachers to establish sustainable gardens that will be a source of food for lunch and break for the orphans. The organisation will provide transport for the volunteer plus inputs for planting while the school will provide garden tools and the teachers to support the children.

The volunteers have a focal person that they go with to the field and stay with. The guide and volunteers will make a daily/weekly/monthly program that will be followed. The focal person will give day to day guidance on the different activities. There are motorcycles and a vehicle on which volunteers will be transported to the different places.

Who we are looking for

We are looking for volunteers who enjoy working with children and have the patience, love and understanding to support them on their journey towards being self-sufficient, independent and productive adults.

Volunteering is a commitment to the children and to the volunteer. Whatever the volunteer gives, will receive back more in love, hugs, smiles and fulfillment. Volunteering requires patience, motivation, energy and initiative.

What you can expect from us

Working on this project will keep you young through playing with them. Children will take you back to childhood and you will learn to be patient, learn great ways of explaining things, and you will have a new perspective on life. This will as well make working with adults much easier.

The organization takes volunteers to enjoy looking at the rich nature in Uganda like forests, Chimpanzee wild life lake Albert in Hoima and Kibaale districts (this will be an offer from the organisation). The organisation will provide information and contact for touristic sites in Uganda but the volunteer will pay for transport and visiting these sites.

What you can / need to bring

There are some things which may help to make your stay more comfortable. While many of these are available locally if you wish to pick them up after you arrive, there are a few things you should plan to bring with you. These are only suggestions:

Things you can bring for yourself

Things you can bring to help the children

If you feel you would like to bring gifts for the kids, below is a list of things we always need. Our children are just like all children! When they are young they love toys and playing games. When they become teenagers, they care a little more about how they look and enjoy having nice things. So please only bring items that you would be happy to give to children in your own family. Secondhand items that are in good condition are always appreciated also.

  • Good quality clothes for children aged 5 to 18.
  • Vitamin C (preferably “Emergen-C”)
  • Board games
