Sea Turtle Conservation Holiday

A real and sustainable sea turtle conservation program with the opportunity to participate in many other activities, like reforestation, recycling for a short term.

About the Program

Fundación Yepez A.C. is a non-profit organization that has been protecting sea turtles in Veracruz, Mexico for 49 years. The organization is small and family run and we need all the help we can get to be able to protect this endangered species and implement all of the eco-projects that we run. Sea Turtles are endangered because of many reasons such as death through fishing nets and pollution, consumption of their eggs as well as increased amounts of predators and we work in many different ways to conserve and protect them.

About the work

Whilst most of the work is hands on work on the beach, there are also many things such as administration that needs to be done in the office, reforestation projects, community projects, environmental education and recycling programs, so variety is definitely part of the job. The main job throughout sea turtle season March to October, is patrolling the beach to protect the nesting turtles and rescue nests as well as receive visitors, release hatchlings and generally take care of the centre. You will work with the whole team directed by a Coordinator that will assign the day to day tasks.

Sometimes night patrols are required so there may be work in the morning then some free time during the day and work in the afternoon with visiting groups and beach clean up campaigns and bonfire and night time patrols where you will be able to witness these amazing animals nest on the beach under the most amazing star-sky. We also look for special skills of the individual volunteers, allowing them to help where their strengths lie, i.e. administration, program development, etc. Most work takes place at the base or on the beach - we work on a total of 43km of beach so the location may vary from day to day and transport will be provided for groups of volunteers to join their leaders at different spots depending on needs. Sometimes special events are organized to raise awareness and the volunteers help in setting up the events, the work is varied and so flexibility is always required.

If you want to work with us long term, we also have a program that is designed for volunteers who stay from 2-8 months to support us. Please search on Volunteer World for Sea Turtle Conservation Assistant in Mexico.
