Sea Turtle Conservation

The boxing day Tsunami affected Kosgoda Sri Lanka tremendously. It wasn't just the turtle population but also the human population.

Hundreds of metres of beach were lost and so were people's livelihoods. Fishing was compromised and even the local tourism industry saw a dramatic decline. Many people are now dependent on the selling of turtle eggs and jewelry made from the shells of Hawksbill turtles. Our placement partner was founded and continues to be run by a local family with a heart for their community and the turtles who use the beaches as their hatcheries. The main aim of the project is to monitor local sea turtle activity and conserve the local nesting sites. One of the most important activities of the project is its hatchery. Within the sanctuary of the project, collected and rescued eggs can hatch safely away from predators before being released into the sea. We help protect these turtles by buying their eggs at local markets- helping support the local economy and creating conservation as a way to feed families. A number of turtles are kept after hatching for 'headstarting' and education before release. Volunteering in Sri Lanka is a very hands-on experience involving beach conservation work, maintenance of the turtle hatchery, turtle feeding and cleaning. You will also be part of the education of local community members and tourists by leading tours through the centre! All your weekends are off, you can hire a local guide or even spend time relaxing on a local beach.

Standard volunteer duties include beach patrols, nest monitoring, nest trans-location, data collecting, delivering talks to schools, guiding English tours through the centre, fundraising, assisting and leading beach clean-ups, cleaning turtle pools, cleaning turtles, feeding turtles, developing proper turtle diets, providing enrichment for in care turtles, assisting with training programs, teaching at local schools during off time.
