Sewing Instructor

Giving sewing courses to future sewing instructors and mostly women on different locations in Suriname, near the rainforest as well as the city

Currently there are sewing courses in Wanica, New Aurora and New Nickerie spread over Suriname. Depending on the number of applications it is determined whether to start one or two courses, everything evolves around the ability to effectively teach the individuals involved. Both for students as well as future sewing instructors because our goal is to extend the sewing classes and also allow them to be given in other places to make it sustainable and that is only if we have enough teachers in different places.

We have organized the sewing courses in a way that students were not only taught, but also could buy a sewing machine and pay it off in a year. With the new courses, we no longer work with new sewing machines, in order to reduce costs.

It is intended that the students also will learn a thing or two from PR and setting up a small business. The completion of the course includes a few former students that will be given additional classes. If successful nine or ten people will be able to continue giving classes.

This position would entail giving sewing classes to (mostly) women on different locations, but especially teaching how to set up their own small businesses applying their skills. Teaching some PR, how to keep track of finances and sustain their business. Basic knowledge on business is necessary, but we also will educate on how to teach setting up businesses. We are looking for volunteers 2016 for at least three months, committed to volunteering.

We would like to have an active individual who is in a position to start in projects on existing locations throughout Suriname. Nonetheless, also considering different courses and starting on new locations. As well as people who are able to interact with people from all kinds of religions and peoples. Given the environment, creativity is essential as well as commitment to development assistance.
