Soccer Coach

Accra, Ghana show on map

Train our local boys and girls soccer teams and support them during the matches on weekends.

If you have a love for sports and a little sporting ability, then you could play an important part in the personal development of young sports men and women in Ghana. Our sports projects include soccer or football, basketball, net ball coaching in schools and communities. Volunteer Sports Coaching Placement takes you on a sport coaching which can have a very positive impact on children. As well as the obvious physical and mental benefits that regular exercise provides, there are many inherent life-skills to be learn, such as the importance of team-work, communication and discipline.

Wherever you travel in the world you will always find people who love sports. Sports bring people together and help to build strong communities, as well as contribute to the creation of healthy, happy individuals. Sports can also provide a much-needed distraction from more negative aspects of people’s lives and, to many child from disadvantaged backgrounds, it can offer a route out of poverty and a path of excitement and promise. Our sports projects share the following aims

Fostering of local sports talent through provision of quality coaches and support for our volunteer trainee coaches. Development of the wider communities in which we work through offering alternatives to young people from impoverished areas.

As a sport coaching volunteer, you will be helping with all aspect of the team while working with the most enthusiastic children in some of the poorest communities in Ghana, we can help you make the most of your time. We will help you find a schedule that is right for you. Sport coaching volunteers are responsible for helping in the organization in all aspects of training; from setting up drills and fitness sessions, to coaching sports teams in competitive games. You will be working with a local coach who will assist you with any help you will need.

Through well-established relationships with local community teams, school clubs, after school sport programs and carefully structured sports placements, we are able to assist volunteers regardless of coaching experience. Whatever your interests we can find the right Sports project in the communities we work. This project is a fantastic chance to improve your skills and ability whilst also helping local children to develop their talents and have fun.

Our football placements in Ghana provide an opportunity for all young players to develop their basic skills and techniques such as development of ball control, accurate passing, keeping possession, game tactics and moving into space. Furthermore you will help the local coach to plan match strategies and take practice games. You will probably be asked to assist in team selection and may even be required to be 'on the bench' for weekend or evening matches. There will also be the opportunity for Volunteers to sometimes take young players to games to see some of Ghana's many top division club teams - like Kotoko and Hearts of Oak - in action to help with their footballing development and to provide a well-earned break from your sport coaching.

We have a boys and girls teams, you can choose which of the teams you will like to work with or you can choose to work with both teams. The project has about 200 boys and 120 girls who are grouped by ages. The team has the under 7, under 9, under 11, under 13, under 15 and under 17. The age range is between 6 years to 19 years.

Typical day

During your time coaching football in the afternoons you will be responsible for the development of young footballers' basic skills and techniques. You will co-ordinate coaching sessions around topics such as development of ball control, accurate passing, keeping possession, game tactics and moving into space. Furthermore you will help the coaches to plan match strategies and take practice games. You will probably be asked to assist in team selection and may even be required to be 'on the bench' for weekend or evening matches.

As a volunteer you will assist the local coach with training the kids. You can implement special training methods if you want to. On weekends you can travel with the team to matches all over Ghana. This is a great opportunity to become an integral part of the local community and
