Street Child is a charity dedicated to empowering some of the most vulnerable children in the world by giving them the chance to go to school and giving their families the sustainable means to keep them there.

We are looking for people with relevant experience to undertake a voluntary entrepreneurial role and make a critical contribution to our organisation by scaling our efforts to enable out of school children to access a meaningful education. 

Street Child Commercial was established in Sierra Leone in 2011 as a unique fundraising stream whereby a series of shops and café bars create a sustainable source of profit which is re-invested in projects. Street Child Commercial is now seeking new avenues for expansion and growth of profits in both existing and new enterprises.

TERMS 

The successful applicant must be prepared to live and work in austere conditions when required, and to travel independently within Sierra Leone. The applicant must be able to manage his or her work plan and report regularly to the team on progress, and will be considered a valued member of the team. 

Typical day

Working alongside the Street Child Commercial team, key responsibilities will include:

  • Researching new market opportunities throughout Sierra Leone 
  • Analysing and modelling the viability of the enterprise
  • Researching the legal and regulatory requirements for establishment of the enterprise
  • Designing and developing the enterprise in its startup phase, including the establishment of operational systems, staffing and management
  • Developing viable expansion plans alongside the local management team 
  • Analysing the profitability of existing enterprises and seeking opportunities for growth 
This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about the social enterprise sector through an immersive experience, and to make a lasting contribution to the organisation and its aim to empower children through education. 

Usual working days are from Monday to Friday from 9AM to 6PM

In order to join the program you need to be at least 21 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

Profound consulting and ongoing support (free)
Street Child (your host organization) provides consulting and is keen to answer all your questions. Once you reserved your spot, you will receive the contact details of your volunteer project.

On-site services

Services by Street Child

Fees are there to cover the daily costs of accomodation (about 9$ per day).

Every volunteer has to cover their own costs for flights, vaccinations and visa.

We ask all our volunteers to fundraise 1200€.
Our projects are only possible because of all the money we fundraise and this method has proven itself to be an effective tool to achieve a lasting impact of each volunteer’s time in their respective project.

Every successful applicant will work together with one of our experienced fundraising mentors, who will provide all the information and material necessary to reach our fundraising goal as well as accompany and help the volunteer throughout every step in the fundraising process

Airport Pickup at Lungi International Airport
From airport to the project location, the pick up time will be agreed before arrival with the volunteer.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees. Food, snacks or beverages are at extra costs.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Lungi International Airport (FNA) in Freetown. We assist you to find cheap flights to Sierra Leone.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Sierra Leone provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Sierra Leone you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Sierra Leone.

You can volunteer at the project site in Makeni/Sierra Leone between 4 weeks and 12 weeks. Please note that the above shown program fees are estimated and subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Street Child will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Crowdfunding Service
Generally, volunteering abroad involves certain costs. In case you need financial support, we will assist you to fundraise your volunteer program in Sierra Leone.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with Street Child during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
