Give care and attention to patients, administration of medications, project work
In this volunteer project you will be supporting a medical facility in Guatemala by giving sick people from the local community your time and affection. You will either be working in a bigger medical home or a small community health centre. If you have a preference on one of these do not hesitate to ask.
These centres care for the people who live in the surrounding areas of Antigua. Usually there are two doctors, one in the morning and one in the evening. Doctors treat a variety of different diseases and ailments, they usually offer medications at low prices for the people.
There is also a different placement offered within the medical home, it is not a hospital but a home for poor people with diseases, the majority of patients are abandoned children and people without family nor financial resources. There are many different areas to choose to work in for this job such as the ward for malnutrition, children with disabilities, the elderly, and/or the ward for babies and children.
This project is perfect for someone who is studying medicine and also nurses.
You will either be working in a large hospital with hundreds of patients or a small health care centre either way both centres have lots to of work to do.
On this project your typical day to day tasks willl include: talking to patients, playing with children, participating in activities, assisting nurses and doctors with any help they need.
If you have some medical knowledge you can help with the distribution of medication, weighing, measuring and taking the temperature of babies and children. Also, you can educate the patients on topics such as hygiene, health and nutrition.
In your spare time there are many different activities to choose from such as an array of sights and museums around the city which helps in understanding the culture. Many volunteers go out to the various bars and restaurants to socialize with friends.
One option is to stay with a host families. This will allow you to indulge in the culture getting to know traditional ways, you will have a private bedroom but shared bathroom and living areas, the house is only a bus journey away from the site.
The second option where volunteers can live with other foreigners is a guest house (prices vary)
Full board is provided when staying with a host family (3 meals per day except sunday)
