ANOPA Project

Sports and Community Outreach Assistant

Using sports like football, tennis, swimming or taekwondo as a means for individual development, promotion of gender equity, conflict resolution and social mobilization.

About the Program

ANOPA wants to improve the life conditions of children and adolescents in the region of Cape Coast with the aid of sports. Students and young people should be strengthened through sports and education programs in developing their personality and give them the opportunity to participate. In addition to the development of qualified school and club sports, are the creation of networks and structures in the center of sport.

Through the use of sports children are automatically introduced to other lesser known sports as we termed them in Ghana such as swimming, taekwondo, volley, basketball, handball, tennis beside soccer which is quite popular in Ghana. The introduction of children to these other sports help them boost their confidence and make them better people in the community.

As a tool for community mobilisation, ANOPA has been able to use sports in bringing people together to undertake communal work such as clean up exercises and further embark on community/school education on pertinent issues like sanitation and the environment among others. In september each year ANOPA organises community clean up exercises within the entire Cape Coast Municipality before the launch of the most talked about Cape Coast Festival(Ogua Fetu Afahye).

Your Role as a Volunteer

Volunteers will assist in coaching sports such as swimming, taekwondo, handball, volley, tennis, and soccer and also assist in our outreach education program on sanitation and the environment.

Volunteers are free to choose which sports they want to coach. Volunteer can choose to coach one or more sports. All training plans and method are done by the volunteer in consultation with a local volunteer coach and training are usually done by both.

What you can expect

Volunteers will be living in a serene accommodation located within an estate setting in Cape Coast.Volunteers will have access to 24/7 full speed internet service, spacious compound with a mini bar and restaurant, building is secured with walled fence, kitchen with all accessories, toilet and bath and an office space.

All other sports activities are done on the field outside in various places within Cape Coast and very safe and secure.

Volunteers will be working with a Project Coordinator, and three other staff and they will be expected to be committed and dedicated to their work. Ghanaians are very friendly in general and volunteers are expected to reciprocate that friendliness and peaceful demeanor. Volunteers can expect to meet a very dedicated and committed team to work with with absolute guarantee of safety and happiness.

A typical volunteer day is very simple. Its starts with the time they wake up which is usually between 8 and 9am. They usually have their breakfast within that time. Volunteers either make(cook) their own breakfast or buy from convenient shops that are usually littered along the streets of Cape Coast.

10am-1pm is an office meeting with Project Coordinator and other staff after which there is a break until 3.45pm when volunteers start preparing towards their outreach programs(sports coaching and/or community enagement).

Between 5.45pm and 6pm volunteers may be home where they can either buy supper from the mini bar/restaurant on their compound or they may decide to cook or better still grab something along the street.

In the evening volunteers normally relax in their mini open bar / restaurant where they surf on the internet and listen to music of their choice.
