Sports Development Coach

Bamenda, Cameroon show on map

Help local children to develop community spirit through team sports and live a healthy and active life.

The program

This active program while extremely fun, is playing an essential role in developing children’s life skills and setting them on a positive path towards a brighter future.  Volunteers are critical to the project, supplying the labor, skills and enthusiasm to motivate the children and encourage them in their sports development and everyday life.  Volunteers will assist the community sporting program during the school holidays and after school hours.  The main objectives of the program are to develop community spirit through sports, teach children who may have had no sports experience and to build relationships throughout the community. It is held at the local community field and is a way to bring the community together and teach sporting and athletic skills that the local children would otherwise not have the opportunity to learn.  With poverty levels extremely high, many lack the funds to join organized teams.  Supplying this free program to local children opens up a whole new world to some children. Through supplying their time, international volunteers supply the ‘people power’ that allow this program to support these wonderful children.

Goals of this Project:

  • Improve the future prospects of Cameroons most vulnerable children
  • Alleviate health and social issues for the children of Cameroon by engaging them in sports and physical activity
  • Improve children’s sporting skills and encourage them to develop a love for physical activity
  • Create inter-cultural understanding which benefits both residents and international volunteers alike.

How you can help

There are so many benefits to both the volunteers and children from participating in this program.  Volunteers will gain great experience working in Africa and will find it to be an extremely important ‘life experience’.  By participating in this program volunteers are supporting and empowering children, keeping them off the streets and from participating in anti-social behavior, while inspiring them to become active and lead a healthy life.  By teaching children sporting skills it gives students a free or low cost social option to participate in sports alongside their friends, to meet new people with similar interests and to engage in positive social activity outside of school hours.  Students will also benefit from a greater cultural understanding from working alongside international volunteers.  Volunteers do not need prior experience in teaching, however they will need patience, enthusiasm and a ‘can do’ attitude.  As with most of Africa, football is the favorite sport but volunteers can arrange games, competitions and tournaments in any sports they would like. As this is not a full time placement volunteers would need to be prepared to spend time at the school as well. Volunteers could also teach sports and physical education at the school.

Volunteers on this program will participate in a variety of tasks and can expect to;

  • Interact with the children on the program
  • Assist with facilitating the lessons and sports/activities
  • Get involved – play and participate alongside the children
  • Help with setting up and packing down the equipment as required

Typical day

A volunteer’s work day on this project will generally last between 4 and 6 hours and while we ask all volunteers to be flexible in this regard, a typical daily schedule is likely to go something like this:

Bamenda (also known as Abakwa or Mankon Town) is a city in and capital of the North-West Region of Cameroon. The city has a population of only 500,000 people, and is located 366km north-west of the official Cameroonian capital of Yaoundé.

Bamenda is known for its cool climate and scenic hilly location. The mountainous countryside around Bamenda is dotted with waterfalls and tea plantations and is ideal for hiking. Many of the city's inhabitants are English-speaking, and Cameroonian Pidgin English is the main language spoken in the shops and on the streets of Bamenda.

Tourism in general is limited in Cameroon, making Bamenda a wonderful place to experience ‘The Real Africa’, and those who venture there will find a nation of remarkable diversity, from its varying landscapes of tropical rainforests and beaches, mountains and desert, to its assortment of people and cultures. National parks and reserves lay claim to some of the richest flora and fauna in Africa! Awesome!

Accommodation

Volunteers are accommodated throughout their stay in Bamenda in a safe and comfortable shared volunteer house. The house is basic but the rooms are spacious and have their own bathroom. Volunteers will generally share a room, but it will depend on the number of people taking part. The bathrooms have western toilets and a mixture of running water and bucket showers. The house also has TV, Wi-Fi (can be unreliable) and a kitchen that volunteers can use if they wish.

Please keep in mind that living conditions in Cameroon are not luxurious. They do have electricity, but load shedding is common so you should expect the power to be off for a period each day. The accommodations have running water but hot water is only available if boiled. Heating and air-conditioning is also uncommon so it is very important to be well prepared for your trip. Although the accommodation is basic, this is part of the challenge and experience of volunteering in a developing country. With a little patience, and a flexible attitude, you will quickly get used to your new surroundings.

Dorm Room Guesthouse Bedroom (Single) Bedroom (Double)
Food & Beverages
Three meals a day will be provided during your stay. Your hosts will provide you with a selection of local foods during your volunteer period, but you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. It is very common for Cameroonians to eat things like rice, stew, beans, corn and bread. The different cuisine may take some adjusting but is part of life in Cameroon.
