Join this volunteer home rehabilitation program in rural areas of Portugal. Explore Óbidos, meet new people and contribute to transform the local community!

The Summer Rural Bootcamp is a volunteer home rehabilitation program in rural areas of Portugal.

For 12 days you can join a group of volunteers from all over the world, in a Portuguese village, to help create a welcoming and cosy home for those who need it the most.

Divided into teams, each group of participants will have a home that will rehabilitate it from the beginning to the end of the program. At night the group joins all together in the accommodation, for fun times and sharing of experiences and culture.

The days start early and are very busy with the rehabilitation, ending at the end of the afternoon. After work it's time to chill and enjoy the sunset and relax before dinner.

The official language of the field is English, although Portuguese is often used mainly for communication with beneficiaries, construction workers and the neighboring community. Either way there will always be someone who speaks English and Portuguese to help you connect with the locals.

At the end of the summer camp, after all the houses have been rehabilitated, there is always a party with all the beneficiaries and local partners to celebrate the work done.

This is an incredible program and a unique opportunity to meet new people and cultures, to know new lands in Portugal and, above all, to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

About Óbidos

The mediaeval town of Óbidos is one of the most picturesque and well preserved in Portugal.

Quite close to the capital and located on high ground near the Atlantic coast, Óbidos has had a strategic importance in the territory. It had already been settled prior to the Romans’ arrival in the Iberian Peninsula, and the town prospered after being chosen by the royal family. King Dinis offered it to his wife, Queen Isabel, in the 13th century, and it became part of Casa das Rainhas (Queens’ Estate), who improved and enriched it throughout the various dynasties. This is one of the main reasons for the high concentration of churches in this small place.

You will find a well preserved castle within the walls, and a maze of streets and white houses that are a delight to stroll amongst. Along with the Manueline porticoes, the colourful window boxes and the small squares, many fine examples of religious and civil architecture from the town’s golden days provide a host of reasons for making a visit.

If you want, take some extra time to stay in Lisbon and explore the city before or after the program.
