50+

In Peru, learning a new language is an economic privilege that few people have access to. Our Summer School Program gives over 100 kids the opportunity to learn English and have their best summer ever while they do it. The classes are provided in three different locations and allow our kids to not only participate for free but to, also, learn a new language, express themselves through art, and play games in cooperation with one another in a fun, summer camp environment.

By learning a new language, our students have the opportunity to have a mind-opening experience; learning how to think in a different language and, most importantly, learning about different cultures. Further, the Summer School Program gives them a summer camp experience that many would, otherwise, be unable to afford and culminates in an end-of-summer field-trip to reward them for their hard work.

What is the volunteer's role?

Our volunteers play a vital role in our Summer School Program as they serve as teachers and role models to our kids. Having both international and local volunteers has been the greatest asset for the kids, the organization, and for the sustainability of our work. Through our international volunteers our kids gain cultural awareness and our local volunteers serve as a source of inspiration, showing that mastery of a second language is possible.

Volunteers teach English, art, and games, Monday through Thursday, in the mornings at three different schools. On Fridays, we have a team meeting in which we discuss how the week went, decide what we will be focusing our lessons on for the following week, and prepare lesson materials.

What are the surroundings like?

We work within three schools that are on the outskirts of the city. Each day that we teach in the schools, we commute via local transportation to the worksite, which generally takes about 40 minutes. The areas that we work within are safe and we are always working at the schools during the day, generally in teams made up of international and local volunteers.

Most of our international volunteers live at the Casa which is a short walk from Trujillo’s main plaza. Some live in homestays, many of which are located not far from the city center and the Casa.

Who do volunteers work with?

Typically, we pair our international volunteers with local volunteers to help ease cultural differences and language barriers in the classroom. Volunteers also work closely with our local and international staff members, who are there to provide support and answer any questions that may arise during the volunteer experience.

What do we expect from volunteers?

We are looking for volunteers who have a passion for teaching, a knack for creativity in the classroom, enjoy working on a team, and who love to travel and are open to experiencing new cultures. Sometimes, we may have a need for materials for our Summer School Program (i.e. art supplies, balls, etc.) however will let you know well in-advance if there are any additional materials that you could bring that would help us to make the experience truly special for our kids.

What can volunteers expect from us?

We provide volunteers with the methodology and teaching resources that we utilize, which have been tested and refined over years of experience. Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to add their own personal touch to the methodology that we have in place, drawing from their own experiences. Further, we have staff members in-country who are happy to help with any difficulties that may arise and can answer questions that volunteers have. We regularly plan fun, social events to partake in that allow our volunteers to have an even more all-encompassing experience as they have the opportunity to socialize with locals, and fellow volunteers within our organization and other organizations.

Typical day

As we had the meeting on Friday, you know exactly what you are going to do. Monday through Thursday you take the public transportation with other volunteers to the school where lots of happy and eager kids are waiting already. Together with the other, Peruvian volunteer you conduct a class of 15 to 20 students. First, you start with a warm-up activity then proceed with the development of the class. On a typical day you teach two different classes with a break in between. There are English classes every day and you alternate between teaching art or games on the other days.
