Support a Public Kindergarten

San Jose, Costa Rica

Work in a public kindergarten in Costa Rica where you can take care of children and plan daily activities for them.

The Project

During this project, you can volunteer at a school that has between 50-150 children. The schools are split up into age groups, and older children have primary school subjects like English.

In addition to being exposed to the Costa Rican culture, volunteers will also gain valuable experience that is attractive to future employers. This experience will help broaden your horizon and immerse you in a new way of life.

Your Tasks

On your first day at the center, you will be welcomed in the Volunteer Center and receive a briefing of what you are expected to do during your stay. If you have any questions, there will be a volunteer representative onsite to help you. After your briefing, you will be escorted to the site and introduced to the project team. You are encouraged to volunteer all day so that you can build relationships and trust with the children, however, half-day volunteer positions paired with a Spanish course are also available.

Tasks in this project may include:

  • Organizing and participating in games and activities
  • Helping with the daily operations of the institution
  • Improving the facilities
  • Providing care and attention to the children
  • Monitoring naps for smaller children
  • Supervising children during all activities

Tasks with preschool children may include:

  • Teaching math and art
  • Helping the children learn very basic English skills
  • Preparing materials to help teach during lessons

Volunteers are encouraged to be as creative as possible and use their personal skills in any way they can to make a difference. Ideas and suggestions for new activities are always welcome, and can be discussed with the coordinator onsite.

Free-time activities

As a volunteer in San José, you have many available activities to do in your free time, such as visiting museums and theatres or hiking on weekends. In addition, the city also offers a vibrant city life and has many restaurants and bars for you to enjoy.
